@Lauravonsmurf
I have had a container herb/vegetable garden for five years. Now that we also have room for an in-ground garden, it seems the cultivar still plays a big role in success. If you've trialed a specified tomato (or any plant) variety for 3 or more years and it fails to perform, you...
Speaking of brown reds, your BR pullet started laying this week! Three eggs in four days. The BR stag is a huge hit with my future stewpot hens.
(BTW, not that I am not fit to judge, but I like that grade stag. He looks very regal.)
How did your hatch go?
BTW, I've been mostly hands off with the pair I got from you, giving them time to adjust. Even so, the pullet hopped up in my lap the other day. I may cull a few more birds from the general flock starting this week.
I don't remember much about cattle, but she does look...

My guess is that they couldn't tell you, rather than wouldn't, but in the end that distinction doesn't matter. It IS frustrating, and I wish they had a chick ID service, even if there was a small cost associated with it.
My MMM was a RSL and clearly different from the RIRs, but have...
Just saw this.
How's your fence coming along? Has your cow arrived? Would love to see pics.
Going a little crazy here trying to get the electric fence up, getting the Christmas geese out of the basement, and my Marans hatching her army of minions.
Good plan! At least you're in good company.
I just made a rule that I am not to bring another bird here unless it's a Bielefelder, Cubalaya, Muscovy, or intended as food.
So what are you picking up?
I'm planning to get some pics of the pair this week.
Their temperament is amazing. Even as chicks, they seem more intelligent than anything else I here. I considering paring my layer flock down to the bare minimum to make room for more.
Did you find a dress?
When I was a kid, my mom found deals on one or two of my formal dresses at the thrift store. Just a thought if you haven't found something.
Got my first Cubalayas today, and think I'm already hooked!
My apologies and thanks to BYC member, @cubalaya , who hung in there despite a LOT of indecisiveness due to family issues on my part!!
Krista, thanks so much for explaining it again. A bit sleep deprived, but I think I understand now.
She was still on the nest this morning. I guess I better mark those eggs and build something so the others stay out of her space.
I'm going to let this play out rather than try to break her.
So, if she's still sitting in two days I should set up a private area? Also, will she continue to lay for a few days since she's only sitting on 2 eggs?
Lastly, what age difference can I have in the eggs? One day? Three...
I think one of my pullets is broody:
She recently started pulling out her breast/keel feathers. This evening, at their usual bedtime, she was still sitting in a nestbox. Despite passive resistance, I took her out. Her ENTIRE keel is bare!!! In the time it took me to refill the feeder, she went...
Did the Day 10 candle here also. Out of 7, it looks like I have 5 clears, 1 maybe, and 1 that is developing. Pretty disappointing given how few eggs I can set at a time.
Might have to do some troubleshooting with my own eggs.
Set seven yesterday in my little Bringsea Mini Advance. One was slightly dirty, but I put it in anyways. Might replace that one with an Olive Egger from my own flock.
Where does one find sawmill lumber? Is it the same as rough cut lumber? My stash of free pallets and wood is running low!
I love air tools! My wrists are shot, so hubby gave me a compressor and tools last Christmas
I have to admire your self-control. I'm 15 minutes from them and I'm having a hard time staying away!! (If they get in Brown Leghorns this week, I'm in big trouble!)
Noticed you're from Varina. When we moved back to the area, I wanted to live in Varina, but the East End has changed a lot in 10...
I'm actively trying to avoid them. I KNOW if I go in there I'll come home with a fuzzy butt or two. Which means I'll also be sleeping in the dog house!!
Good to know their chicks are healthy though.
A trellis? We can make them for the berries (according to Wikipedia Muscadines and Scuppernongs are different terms for the same fruit), but I bet those selfish birds will think I built fruit vine perches just for them. I'm starting to regret having given them blueberries and yogurt as chicks.
:(
I think I know the answer, but am going to ask a dumb question - will chickens eat muscadine/scuppernong fruit?
If so, and I suspect the answer is "yes", I need to figure out how to protect the vines.
