"The tufts gene is lethal when two copies are passed to the embryo. A cleanfaced Araucana is one that does not carry the tufting gene and cannot pass it on." I read this quote on another post. Would she be a good candidate to keep for a roo that does have the tufting?
Good to know. I am...
Thank you so much! I had a hatch of Ameraucana and Araucana but I forgot to label the eggs as I normally do. Figured I'd wait till they were older to ask. :D Would her coloring be considered blue?
Ft. Stewart is in GA. :)
His cheeks are quite fluffy, but he does not have the ear tufts. I found this picture of him, it's the closest I can get of his coloring & face. What would his coloring be called? The black is almost midnight bluish/purple.
I hatched this Araucana pullet back in September. She does not have the muff, beard, or ear tufts but has a completely rumpless rear. Is she still considered Araucana?
I hatched this chick back in September. He was supposedly an Aracauna. I would like confirmation. It's kind of hard to see in this picture but there are a few feathers hanging down. This was a month ago.
This is a picture from today (horribly lighting, sorry) and those same 3 feathers hang...
I should have said broilers coming up soon. There are several boys in these two hatches. I am thinking in my first hatch I have around 11? I have no clue in this hatch here. It will be interesting to see how many I will have.
I wish I had believed them when I heard it originally. I think I'm going to call the local feed store near me and see if they want any of these lovelies. Fortunately, I know I have some broilers coming. That will be a blessing to have but it's going to be busy here soon.
Ok, I don't know what I was thinking. My last hatch has just finished. Someone jokingly told me chicken math deals with exponentials. July 3rd I got my first 4 chickens. By the end of the month I had 13. In August I got 30 roosters for the stew pot and all but 5 are gone; they had some...
Lock down for the last 4 eggs that are in the incubator for a friend. 3 Silkies and a BO/RIR. I saw 2 definite movements, and I think 2 did, but can't be sure. 1 of them has some spider cracks in it so I'm not expecting it to make it. I guess with the rough and rowdies last weekend it got...
I had a 3-day old chick that fell over into the watering dish and got wet. It promptly flipped over into the feed and was coated with food. It got tiny particles of food in it's eye. I've washed it off and used a water dropper to drip water into the eye to help flush it. It won't open it's...
I did. lol These are chicks and only just 3 days older than the ones that hatched this week. They were easy to sneak into the brooder without my hubby's knowledge. MWAHAHAHAHA
Well I can tell the difference, but he hasn't gotten that into it yet. He might notice soon, but it's already...
I got my English Chocolate Orpingtons and American Buff Orpingtons today. Plus there were packing peanuts! YEAH!!!
35 chicks, 31 of which are my beloved Orpingtons. Bliss is mine today.
It was pretty accurate coloring. I didn't wash any of the eggs before incubating them as I read that's not wise. I bleached the whole incubator/turner before using and I wash my hands before and after handling the eggs. I'm pretty sure it was from the dirty eggs, if anything.
Question...I...
Heidisgran, I have extra incentive NOT to hatch. We're military and have been given the heads up that we will be moving. I want to get these guys to the point they'll survive a long distance move. Now just praying that an overseas assignment isn't in the picture right now.
Thanks everyone. I'm thinking there was probably some microbial type thing because it was the only one that stunk. Good news is that thus far we've had 32 of the 36 due today hatch (the 4 silkies died.) I was able to save the 5 silkies that pipped at the wrong end. They are drying off right...
I've been keeping an eye on the temp & humidity and it's stayed constant within 1 degree or two. I've been letting the chicks dry off in the incubator and then snatching them out when I see them climbing on those trying to hatch. Incubator has been open only long enough for me to get the chick...
WARNING: Skip this post if you have a queasy stomach.
What causes multiple malpositionings when using an automatic turner? So far 4 silkies that have pipped have all been upside down in their shells and have died. I put the larger end up in the incubator but when I received them, the narrow...
