    Rats!!!!!!!

Well, I tried exlax - did not work. And I got a ratzapper. We caught a chipmunk, but that's it. My neighbor put out snap traps and caught a few. But those dang things are smart - and would avoid them. Because we are in the city, we called the health department for help. A guy came out to...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Babies! Less than 24 hours old. Six out of seven hatched. This is Lucy's second batch of babies. She is such a good Momma! Lucy is a Salmon Faverolle. The babies are mixed Easter Eggers with Marans, plus I'm not sure what else. The eggs came from a friend.

    Rats!!!!!!!

I'm having a problem, too. I can't use poison because of our dogs. While researching, I found people using ex-lax to get rid of rats. Seriously! They apparently really like the chocolate kind. What I read was they eat it, go back to the nest, and when it starts to work, they go all over -...

    Hen that crows

Mine ended up being a roo. While I've read that a hen can take on "rooster" behavior, the crowing is really rare. He has been relocated to a farm. :(

Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

We've got her isolated with food and water. The wound is big - the whole back of her head and neck - but it already seems to be drying and beginning the healing process. She can't reach it, which is good. I just hope it doesn't get infected. I'm keeping an eye on it, and hoping for the best...

    Easter Egger - rooster?

She looks similar to my Loretta - although you can't really see her tail here. Loretta is one year old. Definitely a girl!

Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Fortunately, no - I have 6 hens who are over a year old. These three were hatched by my Salmon Faverolle (pictured in my Avatar) who had gone broody. They eggs came from a friend with a farm. My original 6 are the sweetest things. They are big, heritage hens - 2 EEs, an Australorp, Speckled...

Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Very helpful photos! I couldn't catch Donna, but I caught Amelia and everyone is right. Saddle feathers are coming in, I just couldn't see them yet. Donna looks almost exactly like your boy - except for the feathered legs, and our chicken has a much redder comb and wattle. To top it off, I've...

Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Here's a couple of pics of Donna - or is it Donald? Seriously - looks like a hen. No pointy saddle feathers at all. (S)he is mixed heritage. Not Easter Egger, but Marans, and I don't know what else. This one hatched from a very dark brown egg. I didn't even ask what people thought about...
