You are doing fine- 16% layer feed is fine, frequent small treats of scratch or mealworms or kitchen scraps is fine, 2 roosters for 25 hens is fine. You have checked the ladies and their home for mites and I trust that you don't have a mite problem so that is fine. I also trust that your girls...
This is wonderful, thank you. Something I am doing for this summer, as it gets very hot where I live, is freezing portions in muffin tins as well as in bags for winter. On hot days I can grab a couple of the frozen "muffins" and toss them out frozen. The girls love their cooling treat!
This is a good list and one I follow fairly closely with my hens but... I have seen my girls eat:
a dead rat; an entire nest of baby rattlesnakes, alive; cat poop; and even another hen who was injured. I'm pretty sure all of these things are toxic to humans, like solanine in large amounts...
Personally, I'm on the fence about this but I do have a question. Many are saying that commercial hatcheries don't use this method, so it must not work. How do you know that commercial hatcheries don't use it? Maybe they do. It obviously is not perfect and does not guarantee absolutely zero...
Incubator is up and running, holding temperature and humidity. Yay! Eggies are out, resting at room temperature. Looks like we're all ready to set tomorrow morning! I'm so excited, hope I can sleep tonight and don't give in to the urge to go ahead and set them in the middle of the night...
Sign me up! I've been thinking about hatching for a while but couldn't decide, this did it for me. You guys are such enablers for a chicken addict like me.
First, that is a big beautiful run! My chickens would think they had hit the jackpot if they had that run.
But... your chickens will never come out into it until there is some shade. You can add all the toys you want (the chickens won't care either way, they will be happy just to scratch in the...
that is actually a pretty nice little coop and with the openings under the corrugated roof it has a good amount of ventilation as it is built. really, no modifications to it are necessary to have a nice little basic coop.
Unless your coop is hermetically sealed with a hepa-filtered air recirculation system, keeping them locked in the coop will not do a bit of good. The smoke is in the coop, just like it is in your house. I live in Trinity County, CA, which has been in the "very unhealthy" range for weeks and my...
Many people claim this really works. 😁 I have never had luck with hot pepper deterring dogs, but be aware that chickens LOVE hot pepper which will only serve to attract them to the fence, enticing the dog even more! Personally, I would first call Animal Control, explain what is happening and...
Yay! I just looked up Papas Poultry and will call them tomorrow. It looks like he has just what I'm looking for available now. See? This is why I love BYC! It's just the best people here.
Thanks Ron! If anyone in my area has a few fertile eggs to sell, let me know, I'm itching to get a new flock started! I've tested the incubator and have the brooder all set up in my laundry room. If I don't get hatching soon I'll have to wait until spring... Yikes!
Hey all! I just moved to Trinity County (Weaverville) from Loleta. I think I'm going to like it here although I miss the coast. Re-homed my flock when I moved and I'm having serious chicken DT's, I miss them so much! Setting up my new little coop and run this week and I'm looking to buy a few...
I've raised a lot of chickens and here is what I see- the nests themselves are fine in size, shape, and location. Everyone else is right about needing a solid bottom and some sort of nesting material; straw, hay, grass clippings, etc. Also, consider closing the backs, you can use a long board...
