Thank you Cathy! The other hen I was worried about seems to have recovered today, but I'm going to go ahead and order some meds to have on hand. Do you think the 4 surviving hens will be carriers? I still have them quarantined, and the ground they were on while infected fenced off.
Good info. I wonder about all the use of medicated feed, and if that's helping to create resistance. I've never fed medicated to my chicks because of that concern.
Hello All, I believe I may be dealing with a nasty strain of Corid resistant Cocci.
The end of April I purchased a Mille Fleur d'Uccle rooster and added him to a flock of 9 MFd'U hens, ranging in age from 2-9 yrs. Right away I noticed the roo had diarrhea and was a little thin, but I thought...
Agreed! After years of having an on the ground coop (pictured at right), I finally decided to upgrade. I built this coop almost entirely out of pallets, so didn't cost too many $$$.
Biggest perks for me:
No Runnoff wetting the bedding every time it rains, and it's for the most part rat proof!
$5 a dozen currently. I'm in east TN. Birds are fed non GMO feed, and moved every few days to fresh pasture.
While selling eggs is a small % of my income, I think it's really important to not undercut people who are trying to make a living from their birds. I go with the general rule of thumb to...
Tellico Plains/Madisonville TN here, so probably a bit far for you.

I've got fertile eggs from my Mille fleur d'Uccle Bantams for sale.
These are hardy, spunky little bantams that make great pets or lawn ornaments. They are especially good around children.
I breed mine to be as close to the standard of perfection as possible. Birds pictured are the actual...
Just finished reading this thread. Lots of good info regarding how to remove a broken egg! Sorry that you ended up losing her! You did all you could. :hugs
I just had this exact some thing happen to a hen a few weeks ago. Thankfully she was not laying, but she had the same kind of crusty vent...
First, I just want to say that the sitting in her little nest on your desk is adorable. :love
Is she a full time house chicken?
Probably just removing the next and eggs will break her.
Could you maybe post a photo of the injured leg? My guess is, from your description of the scene, is that something might have tried to grab one of her legs. Raccoons, Weasels, and other small predators are known to reach through chicken wire and grab birds by the legs.
But you also mentioned...
