Pox is spread by mosquitoes. They've been bad this year, so it makes sense for more cases of Pox to show up. Mine had it earlier this summer. Laying was down to almost nothing. They all healed up in a few weeks and now they look and act just fine.
My free-range lot is full of beautyberry bushes. The birds' favorite resting spot is under a big one. They never touch the berries. That's enough for me to say, don't.
The mosquitoes have been terrible this year! Worst I've seen in the 8 years I've been at this house. My flock is recovering from a round of Fowl Pox. Thankfully there were no casualties, just miserable birds and nearly no eggs laid.
My 6 new chickies. The yellow one got out and the big hens picked on it so it has a bloody spot on its head. Seems to be fine, though. I set 18, 11 were actually fertile. 8 hatched, 2 died while still wet. 1 pipped but then died in the shell. I guess it's ok considering this is Mama Hen's...
Mine are hatching! 18 set under mama hen, 11 actually developed.
The first two hatched and then died while still wet. :(
Now there are 5 little peepers under mama. Waiting to see what the others do. :D
They do not need a rooster to go broody. My buff who's sitting now has gone broody regularly in her 2-1/2 years. Only this spring do I have a rooster.
It might help to set a bunch of fake eggs in the nest. If a hen sees a nest full of eggs she might be convinced to start brooding more than...
I also set mine on the 4th. Mama is a Buff Orpington. Rooster is a Black Copper Marans, over a EE's, Rhode Islands and others.
I candled them last night and 11 are growing, out of 18. This is with one rooster and 15 hens.
Here's a great link about candling...
I finally got mine. $1.50 off / 1 bag. Tractor Supply's house brand Dumor is cheaper than that every day, and the local feed store is even less. Sorry Purina, you lost me.
Hi from Texas.
Watch those dogs carefully. The only birds I've lost to dogs were to a Lab mix and a Chihuahua mix. You already know what the Pom is capable of.
Offering two of these four Black Copper Marans roosters. I am keeping two and offering two.
They are 16 weeks old. They are crowing and starting to "woo" the ladies.
Price is for the pair. I paid more than I'm asking for the chicks, plus feed. I'm giving them a chance before I put them...
Lots of emails waiting for me this morning. :D
I changed my Pause setting.
I re-subscribed to a few.
I logged out and back in.
Not sure which one helped, but something sure did.
I haven't received any Daily Digest emails since the software change.
I was getting the Immediate emails until the weekend of 2/3, then they stopped. Something changed at that point.
I I just now changed the "pause" setting and un- and re-subscribed to a couple threads, including this one...
No updates here either, whether immediate or daily. It's been like this since the weekend. I have to go the the BYC homepage and click the threads from there.
