I'm glad to see you had a pretty good hatch even this late in the season. I have 12 of 18 at 9 days old now and they already have some wing tip feathers comming in. These are my best looking chicks so far this year. Let me know what you come out with on sexes if you don't mind. We can...
I can see why it could be hard for some. Fortunately I have dressed wild game so it came easy to me. Also, the ones we are eating have been designated as such since they arrived; I would probably feel bad if it was one of my breeders or layers. I've gotten to know them too well.
I held the head down so to keep the bird firmly in the cone while it bled out. I also had this page up for reference.

It's the top listing on the sticky thread at the top of this section.
I have chicken in the oven and it smells good.
I just recently did my first cockerels and I used a cone and a razor blade. Unless you want one flopping around everywhere and a coating of blood on everything, use the cone. Also, by cutting the vein under the jaw you can bleed out most of the blood in a bucket. It was so easy my first time I...
I can relate to a little OCD; I spend it in my moss gardens "rice picking " weeds. I could see myself with a little rake in the coop making Zen designs in the sand.
I was running a little low on eggs this past spring before pulled a couple of ENOURMOUS black snakes out of the coop. You could tell they were all pumped up on protein; they were so fat they couldn't pick themselves up to bite.
My leghorn rooster molted earlier; lost his whole tail plus a lot of body feathers. About the same time the hens seemed to be molting as well; say a couple of months ago. Now the leghorn hens are loosing their tails; they didnt before. My Brahma roosters lost their tails earlier; they are...
No stupid question here. Ok, yes you may have to do some training. I usually have a dim light when I first move young ones outside. I lost a couple from piling up so thats just my thing. They are used to sleeping with some light on so don't be afraid to leave it on; it will help them get used...
Just though I'd give one more vote for the lazy Brahmas. I know I'm seeing the effects of fat lazy less frequent laying Dark Brahma hens. I'm making it a point to keep my new pullets a little trimmer and exercise them some how. I have to admit though, the plump 14 week cockerels are starting to...
Without seeing the coop it's hard to say; also, where are you? How cold are your winters? I live in Tennessee and we don't get terribly cold; no heat in my coop. I do add some extra wind resistance( tarps) over alot of the openings. Last year everyone was fine. I also have deep pile in the coops...
Got ya on the brows. I recently found and old version of a poultry standard specifically for Plymouth Rocks; it was very detailed and had lots of good and bad examples. Is there anything like this for the Brahmas, new or old, free online preferably but ok if not. Thanks for your information.
Just for some more Brahma chat; here is the same adult roo @ 14 weeks; do they just get fat and lazy in the wing posture? He seems to have had a much better stance when he was younger. Note the bronze coloring there...
And now you can find the same coloring in just a few feathers, @ 18 months...

I need to get a better pic of the big guy when his tail comes back in; he was a little freaked over the camera. So the little guy with the brown hues; probably from one of the hens? And; is this a bad thing with the darks? I have 3 fairly old cockerels feathering out; seem like the...
