We've have this particular hen for a few months. She has just started attacking my 5-year old, unprovoked, when he goes to let them out in the morning. She's not broody. She is probably near the top of the pecking order in the flock of only hens, so maybe she is doing the dominant hen thing...
Hi all! I've got five 8-week old Iowa Blue cockerels up for grabs, free. There are 4 silver, 1 smoky. All are in fantastic shape, raised by Mama hens, and are ready and raring to go. I'm in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, so if you're near there, come check them out. They were hatching eggs from Kari...
Well...I've done a lot of research and am wondering if it's coryza. She did smell funny earlier, but since quarantine and antibiotics, that's gone away. The eye and nose are draining a clear to yellowish liquid, and the swelling hasn't gone down at all.
I will look in her mouth as soon as my...
Hi. I've got a 1-year old Barnevelder lady with a very swollen eye. It showed up quickly, along with oozing and some nasal discharge. We watched it for 2 days, and when it got worse, we started penicillin injections. Today is day 5 of injections, and it's still looking the same as when we...
Okay, another question. I've got some 14 week-old black Ameraucana cockerels that are not ending up being show-worthy. I am wondering if it's worth it to feed them out to about 6-7 months to butcher them, or should I just cull/sell them now? I've got someone that will butcher for $2/bird. I...
I actually agree with you - Pink and Yellow were my favorites too. There's something about them that just attracts me to them. Yellow has some heft to her, and both have a good, healthy appearance. Yeah, my original blue hen is a keeper whether she is "good" or not. She's a sweetie.
I'm...
I'm just using plain old zip ties for now so I can tell them apart. Once I get into it more (and get to a show where bands are sold), I'll get some "real" ones.

I noticed that too, but the SOP says, "COMB, FACE, WATTLES AND EARLOBES: Red, except female earlobes to be very pale, matching color of skin." So that makes me feel a little better?

I'm also pretty sure these ladies have worms. I see small white eggs in at least one hen's poop. I've never wormed before, but from what I read, Wazine first, then 2 weeks later, Valbazen or Ivomec? Dump eggs the whole treatment time + 2 weeks?
Geez, this is getting expensive.

OK - I'm posting pics of my hens and older pullets. Keep in mind, I yoinked them off a roost in the dark and put them in front of a camera, so none of them are really standing in a natural stance. It's more the "deer in the headlights" stance. And condition is pretty cruddy on the hens, as...
