So it seems like every other person on this forum has chickens that are tame as a dog. Last year I got chicks and they grew up semi-tame, but unless you have food they don't want any thing to do with you. My Barred rocks like to follow me around but that is the most interaction they tolerate...
Try picking her up, pushing her against the ground without hurting her, and try to get her to submit. Or bump her around, show you are stronger, or giver her treats when she does submit. -(Completely Non-Professional Advice)
That's a dedicated chicken, its funny that they like to sit on nothing. I don't know if I will need to break their broodiness, but usually when I suspect broody behavior I place them on the ground, which is very cold, and they usually start building a nest were I put them down, but then walk off...
I take them off the nest because I don't want the eggs that I eat to start developing, but I was curious as too why they want to sit on the eggs a lot more all the sudden. Where I live it is wayyy to cold right now to allow chicks to be hatched, so maybe in a few months I will let them stay on.
They do seem to be acting broody. They would shuffle the eggs and do this weird dance that they never do, and when I move them and place them on the ground they stay flat, which they also almost never do. I have read about peoples chickens going 'half broody' and over a longer period of time...
I may or may not be doing turkeys this year. But I wanted to ask, what are some things I should prepare for to raise turkeys, I raise broiler chicken, laying hens, and guinea fowl. But have actually never seen a live domesticated turkey (I've seen hundreds of wild ones though), so I'm not sure...
How did you raise your hens to let you pick them up. None of my chickens will let you pick them up, but some will tolerate it, others flap around. 80% of them are not skittish and actually follow me around, but as soon as I reach for them they run away.
Hello, recently (last month or so) some of our chickens (7-8 months) are exhibiting broody behavior. Some of the chickens when they lay will just sit in the nesting boxes then lay an egg 30 minutes later, some times they will act like they are brooding only to lay an egg, and other times they...
Yeah wheel barrowing them was no fun, always got nasty stuff on me and smelled terrible.
I am looking forward to raising turkeys, man 55 pounds, that's massive. Was thinking of getting Bronze and White turkeys, not sure how I should go about building their coop, they are quite big. I wonder if...
Yeah our feed store likes to label Freedom Rangers and Red Broilers as the same thing, they did it on last years receipt. Thanks for correcting me.
Last year when I raised them it was chaos, they lived in a large garage in a 4x8 brooder pen, which the bedding needed to be changed every 24...
How can I get my hands on some Toads. I would love to raise 50-75 of them come spring, I have been looking all over for an alternative to CX, and the only answer I get is "Raise Freedom Rangers" which I have raised but was not impressed by, these Toads seem perfect for my needs.
I will be raising meat birds again this year, last year I tried raising Freedom Ranger chickens with Cornish Cross chickens, I was not impresses with the Freedom Rangers (I believe they are also known as Red Broilers). The Freedom Rangers were aggressive to the significantly docile CX, their...
That's tough. I have slipped up a few times safety wise, for example accidently leaving part of a plastic bag outside, which they pecked to pieces, or when I left chicken wire with sharp ends exposed and at chicken eye level, luckily their have been no injuries or deaths due to my mistakes...
Saw one of your posts on the Guinea Fowl 101 thread about your guineas chasing your "Toads". Hahaa wasn't sure what you were talking about, but I am glad I clicked this link. I have been looking for a meat bird like this! Been looking for a meat bird that doesn't fall under its own weight...
Thanks guys for the responses. She was on her stomach so I don't think it was a heart attack, but may still be.
I think it may be air sack mites or sinus infection because our whole flock has been affected, but she was the first one to die. Today was the first day I noticed any symptoms in...
This morning at around 9:30 I went to open the coop and at the front of the door laid a dead Rhode Island Red pullet (7 months old). She had been dead for at least 2 hours, her face was frozen but her body was not. The day before she was just fine, and did not seem to have any issue, even before...
