The trick to getting the higher humidity is using a larger space, not neccesarily deeper. The more space that the water takes up, the higher the humidity.
For instance, if you wet a damp towel and sit it inside, it doesn't have as much water, but it's taking up more space so you will get a...
That is going to be painful.
If you cup the chick in your hand backwards, with the wings securely under your hand you will be able to quickly rinse the membrane off.
Have you seen them rocking? Or heard any faint tapping or peeping? Those are usually the easiest ways.
If you have a flashlight, you can shine it on the egg for a few seconds and see if that makes it rock.
Otherwise, we sit and wait.....
I've had some that were rocking feverishly during...
I had a little bit of shell and membrane on a chick this morning.
I ran the tap until the water was warm but not hot and held the chick's back under the water until I was able to roll the membrane off.
Then you can use the "warm" setting on your blow dryer and dry her. Chicks seem to love...
The hatching came and went and #4 was still in the bator.
I did a float test, nothing. So I put it in a ziplock bag and opened it.
Just like the other one, this one seemed to be stuck to the membrane in two places.
It was a fully formed miniature embryo that grew for at least 20 days but...
If you are nervous about the humidity, and there are no pips yet, it would be okay to lift the lid and add more warm water to the trays.
For your next hatch you can pick up a hydrometer at Walmart in the section where they sell thermometers and stuff. I paid about $20 for mine, and it's...
I had 5 successfully hatch and feeling very good about it.
We had a family meeting this afternoon, a baby met the siblings, 3 weeks and 6 weeks old. It's amazing how fast they grow.
It's hatch day.
I have 12 eggs, including #4, in the bator. I have 3 that have hatched already, 3 more with pips.
And....no action yet from #4.
Still waiting......
When I first started reading posts here on BYC, it seemed as though any loss of an embryo could be traced back to the handlers mistakes.
I felt very defeated. My first hatch wasn't great and I blamed absolutely everything on myself. It wasn't great for the confidence, and I wasn't sure that...
Perfectly normal. The chick was wiggling into the right position, and now you just have to sit and wait.....
Mine always rock on Day 18 and 19, and then stop completely until pipping.
You should be able to see the air cell and possibly a bit of "growing room". If the eggs are dark without a visible aircell it means they have already pipped internally, but you probably won't see that yet.
If there is still a bit of growing room, you'll be able to see movement from the...
