If it helps, if you are new to chickens, follow my advice. I got to where i was overthinking everything, and worried over minute details, like i had to do EVERYTHING right. A few years back someone on here told me to just chill out and not worry, that as living creatures with minds of their...
The hens i have that i got as chicks (3 RIR, 2 Doms, 2 Lackenvelders, 1 B'cup) started laying at 5-7 months. I was starting to wonder what i was doing wrong, but in two years i dont think the Doms have ever missed a day. With other Doms, Orps, & Brahmas, eggs are pouring in, but the other...
Mine did the same exact thing when i got lazy about keeping hay in the boxes. I just cleaned out the corner they began using, then cleaning the next boxes out, I just make sure i keep lotsa hay in em now. After that, plus a fake egg in each box, theyre back to using the next boxes.
Thats exactly why i dont throw cracked eggs back into the run and i dont give em egg shells weve used as a calcium supplement, i dont EVER want them to associate their eggs with food.
As an avid, 75-100 fishn trips a year fisherman, my birds eat A LOT of fish! As i clean i thrown the guts and scraps over the fence, and they never leave a crumb. Done it for years with no problems.
I clip one wing to keep em off balance if they try to fly, but they're still able to jump/flap to a pretty decent height. Mine have no problem getting three to four feet up onto a roost.
With eggs, low levels of some type of radiation are used to "sterilize" them. I dont know about you, but i dont trust any Fed telling me something's ok, especially iradiated food!
BeeKissed, again, exactly right. My wife was like that in a way, but had an open mind and was willing to try things she never had. When she met me, store bought anything was "safe" and fresh eggs, chicken, or beef was somehow "gross". Why??? because you get to see EXACTLY where your food...
cant figure out whats in their minds, thats for sure! my 15 mo old RIR always laid in her nest, then for two weeks, no eggs. Then two days laid them in the run, then for whatever reason went back to the box.
yakima's right about the pet food. i had so many dogs at one time that i just poured pounds of it out once or twice a day, then one evening i realized in the dark i was reaching down and scratching coons behind the ears. TRUE STORY! they were so used to us, they were running amongst the...
and Meara, i understand what you're saying, sort of, but sometimes there is no choice. I dont react out of emotion, I react out of a real sense of what is necessary. I dont react off-the-cuff, and if i had i would have never lasted in the military and 22 years as a police officer. Ive got...
the six i have, from chihuahuas to currs, do NOT bother the chickens, rabbitts, or kittens. One, a standard pomeranian mix, was a bit overzealous in playing with the birds and other animals, but with a little training, he now goes in the run with me and lays down while i work. birds hoppin...
oh yeah, and thats not counting the six ive kept, fed , and loved. The good dogs that have been playmates and companions to my children. have you ever seen a "pack mentality" set in on large, malnourished, abandoned dogs? familiar with what they are capable of?
im not sad in the least! never lost the first minutes sleep either. bout fifteen dogs in eight years there, and not just over chickens. ive had my rabbits, cats, kittens, and yes a few times, chickens attacked. i wont have one in the road growling toward my kids either, and i dealt with that...
