A high protein feed or some feather fixer feed can help with growing back feathers. But if she's broody she won't be in taking enough to grow them back quickly. How many hens do you have? Is he the rooster's favorite? She could also be being pecked by the other hens if she's in and out of...
X2 in getting out there around dusk. Also because of their horrible night vision they may not be able to see the coop or it's just too dark and scary. Do you have a light in the coop? Leaving it on around dusk will encourage them to go in when it gets dark out.
I always hatch in the spring, then deworm the following fall when they have reached adult weight. I also use Valbazen for the first deworming, then a rotation of Safeguard and Valbazen every six months.
Hi all, looking for some input on what gender you think these guys are. They hatched from eggs I purchased on ebay and are 11 weeks old. So far no crowing, but the bird labeled number one is redder in the face and comb. Sorry for the poor pic quality, I only had my phone!

My last batch started around 16-17 weeks. Once they start be ready for tons of eggs! Besides bright red combs mine always get super vocal and agitated (I call it chicken PMS). Some pullets will submissive squat when you put your hand on their back, though none of my leghorns ever did.
Probiotics can help with poop issues. I'd keep her quarantined for at least two more weeks to both monitor any egg laying and health issues and keep your existing flock safe.
I think a much better investment is constructing a run. Access to an outdoor space will entertain much better than anything you put in a coop to "play" with.
Sounds like you have a broody on your hands. You shooing her out last fall may have been enough to break her. I find this true of a lot of my first time broodies as well. You'll need to decide whether to break her or let her hatch chicks.
I've purchased juvenile golden buffs from Meyer. Quality was fine, though shipping charges are what will get you. They were debeaked (debeaked and trimmed beaks are the same thing). I ordered from Meyer as I have been happy with past chick orders (they're also the closest mail order to me...
Very cute! Her eyeliner makes her look like Cleopatra! She looks similar to my Columbian Wyandotte as a chick, who is now white with black neck feathers. Except yours definitely has more gray than yellow/white.
It's so funny when they sleep on their side that way! My love BASE jumping off their heat plate. The 3 day olds just figured it out this morning and are having a blast!
Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but PeekABoo is your only chicken and she's a few weeks old? If so you will not be able to hatch eggs without an incubator as she would have to be broody, which can only happen after she begins laying (and some hens never go broody). Depending on PeekABoo's exact...
Valbazen I usually have to order online. If you can find it it's 1/2 cc for large fowl and 1/4 cc for bantams. I use a syring and give directly in their mouths (set them on a stump and squeeze them gently wih my knees, pull gently on waddle, squirt into back corner of their mouth). You'll...
They are likely hen. Chickens don't accept change very easily, so they are definitely putting the roo in his place. How long have the older hens been acting as moms?
It could be a lack of protein due to how harsh broodiness is on a hen. I would try to break her broodiness and provide a 20% protein feed. As a side note, I thought my current broody was eating the eggs as well, but it just turned out that her own weight was crushing them, then when she had...
I deworm twice a year - Valbazen in the fall when them come off pasture and safeguard in the spring (had to use Wazine this year however). If I don't, I end up with a huge worm issue (verified via fecal egg count) or can see round worms in their droppings. It's just become part of my normal...
