My chickens forage and we also give them all our fruit and vegetable scraps and Countryside Organics feed. I don't think nutrition is the problem.
I am using the 2 hour cool down feature on the Brinsea - thank you for confirming that was the right choice! I appreciate your help. I'm going to...
Will Morrow (Whitmore Farms) has his own line, which he's been working on for years. He was specifically highlighted in the book The Small Scale Poultry Flock for his work restoring Delawares to a truly dual purpose breed. I got mine as chicks from him - picked them up on his farm in Emmitsburg...
I hadn't heard that about Delawares. In fact, I was just talking to someone else who breeds Delawares and he has great hatch rates. I got my breeding stock from Will Morrow and the birds are very healthy and strong. My roo is a beast - in a good way.
I don't. My vent hole was wide open and the humidity was approx. 65%. I did have the humidity on 55% for four days during the middle of incubation while I hatched a turkey egg in there, but I can't see that being such a problem as I had 11 hatch out just fine. I'm leaning toward maybe it's an...
If anyone is still around and wants to help me with a mystery...
I've done another hatch since the Easter hatch and it was terrible. I had 4 babies zip halfway and then die. The membranes looked yellow like they were dried out almost immediately, but the humidity was fine and 11 others hatched...
I'm pretty sure one of my favorite EEs is broody, and I would love to let her raise some chicks. Last night was the first night she slept in the nest box, but she pooped in it! I haven't had a broody do that before - usually they hold it until morning and produce a horrible-smelling gigantic...
I put my one turkey egg in lock down today (day 26). It's with some other eggs that are on day 7, and I'm worried they won't handle a couple days at higher humidity.
Since I don't have a broody and both my incubators are full, this is my only option.
Is 4:1 the best ratio for overall survival of the species or is that the best for our controlled raising and breeding purposes? It would make sense that more males would be produced in order for them to compete, ensuring only the strongest roosters would be breeding and taking care of the...
Gender is determined upon fertilization depending on the genetic material provided by the parents. The embryo can't be without gender.
ETA: I stand corrected by @ronott1 that the genetic information from the rooster has any part in it. But, it's still true that genetic information determines...
The chicks need a place to get out of the heat if they want, so I would not make the entire room that warm. You will see broody mamas encouraging their chicks to get out and run around even when its very cold. She is always ready to let them get warm again, but the chicks getting used to lower...
It seems everyone recommends the Brinsea Spot Check, which I did get. But what about a hygrometer? My Accurites are junk and always read different than each other in temp and humidity. What should I get?
They are all chicken eggs except for that one turkey egg. The batch in one incubator will be on day 8, the other will be on day 3. Does it even matter? Will it be detrimental for either…or both? Thanks for your help.
I am about to put a batch of shipped eggs in my one incubator and my other one is full of eggs on day 6. But I have one lone turkey egg that's due to hatch Sunday. Can someone advise which eggs would better handle the higher humidity for a couple days?
