Should there be some kind of oversight required?

It's a hard one for me to ask because I feel like we should be more free but after earlier I've been wondering. We were in town picking up a few things and I caught an exchange with someone in a full on B* fit over dead chicks that were garage kept with no brooder setup so they died overnight...

    Fussy girls

The danger voice got me!! Our girls do that sometimes for no apparent reason! I’ll be standing right there with them, and they just kinda scream for a few seconds, and then they’re good again!

Are ducks smart enough to get out of the cold?

Nope, at least I don’t think so and I’ve had ducks 10 years in my climate temp range from 0 to 100. I’ve seen freezing rain days with wind create the ducksickles. That’s when I do force them all inside to my semi finished garage type Hospital room that I have for them. They’re in there right now...

Can I use a plant grow light instead of a traditional heat lamp with my baby chicks?

My grow lights are pretty bad ass and provide both heat and light for my medicine plants!

Brooder Box- incandescent vs heat light

The common heat lamp bulb are incandescent bulbs. They just use more watts than many other incandescent bulbs, to make more heat. But for the question I think you are asking, I would suggest you try a bulb that does not make much heat. The less heat the better, in my opinion, for the first test...

got chicks in winter, new to chickens

I am also getting winter chicks. It was quite cold the first week I had my first batch but it will stay cold for my next and snow as well. My brooder is next to my house and I don't have many predators walking up to my door, we keep the outside light on as well. I'm not super experienced or...

    Supplies for new chicks.

Best feed whatever you can readily get fresh in your neck of the woods - what I have most available are local brands, and that's what I stick with. Grit for chicks is shown below for size reference, you only need a little bit so a scoop from a bulk bin is the best bet: The only medication I'd...

    Too many brooder options

I use an old netted playpen, lined with a plastic sheet for my chicks and put an infrared heater in it. At about 3-4 weeks I cover it with another net as they can fly out of the pen. At 6 weeks they go into a small coop until they are integrated with the older hens.

Should there be some kind of oversight required?

Just heartbreaking! My inner b*atch would have most assuredly kicked in and I would have said something. Well, a lot of things.

Any idea what could have happened?

I know there’s a million reasons why chicks could die, but I’m hoping to see if this was a ‘just because’ or maybe something I should watch for. We got 4 pullets from a local farm a week ago, they were between 1-2 weeks. This is my 3rd time with chicks and I’ve never lost one before. Our brooder...

    Light Cycle in Brooder?

I'm getting my first batch of chicks in a week. I have my brooder built and ready. I'll be using a brooder plate instead of a heat lamp, but the brooder will be situated in my uninsulated garage. Temperatures at night will be in the mid 50s here in Texas. The garage has no windows so will be...

    Pipd's Peeps!

Soooooo I did some renovation of the outdoor brooder. I figured the chicks didn't move because it was too dark in it. I split it in two, sectioned up the top so I could access both sides and added lights. Moved the fully feathered ones out to it and already they were more comfortable and...

    chicks seemingly in distress

Hi, I'm an old member, but just recently got some new chicks after a 1 year hiatus. I have 8 chicks, just brought them home today. They're in a playpen brooder, with food, water, and a brooder plate. Temps are good, they've figured out the nipple waterer, and have everything they need. My...

    Panicking! Advice please!!!!

I had one once that was born all gooey because my humidity must of been too high. I took it into the bathroom and actually washed all of the goo off very gently and put it in the brooder under the light to dry. It is my biggest duck as it is a Mule duck and is perfectly fine. They tell you to...
