What do you use to write on eggs?

I use pencil, I know lots of people use a marker but pencils seem safer to me and I like to minimise any risks to the eggs as much as I can!

It's lockdown day for the 5 mystery eggs, should be hatching on Sunday! Will be fun to see how they turn out, I'm tempted to go any buy some more from there this weekend... My other light sussex has gone broody again, I'm not sure what to do with her. Last time she crushed the eggs while they...

On a more cheerful note, I candled the runner duck eggs yesterday and 2 were clear, 5 were good and 1 I wasn't sure about, so we should have some ducklings in a few weeks! I set another 9 eggs in the incubator and have 5 set to hatch on Sunday, looking forward to seeing how these turn out as...

Sorry to hear the 5th chick didn't hatch :( Sadly the little chick had to be euthanised, part of it's intestines were on the outside and it was getting weaker so I think it was the kindest thing to do. It was the first chick we've had to cull and I found it more upsetting than when we've had...

Chick with unabsorbed yolk and maybe intestines hanging out, please help!! *graphic photos*

Yes, I think this might be the way to go, I'm not great at stuff like that, I'm always scared I'll do it wrong and cause more pain, but my husband is home soon and will do it for me. Thank you everyone for your advice, I really appreciate it.

Help! Chick hatched with unabsorbed yolk and intestines on the outside.

Thank you, I think I'm going to have to euthanase :( it's very small compared to the others and although it was bright initially, it seems weaker now. I feel bad, but I think it's the kindest thing to do.

Chick with unabsorbed yolk and maybe intestines hanging out, please help!! *graphic photos*

Thank you, I suspected as much to be honest, it's very small compared to the others that hatched. I haven't culled a chick before, what is the best way to go about it? I've read about using vinegar and bicarb to create CO2, is that a humane way to do it?

Help! Chick hatched with unabsorbed yolk and intestines on the outside.

A few more pictures of it taken just now. I tried gently pressing it with a damp cotton bud but it doesn't want to go back in.

Chick with unabsorbed yolk and maybe intestines hanging out, please help!! *graphic photos*

Thank you for your reply, it doesn't look great does it :( I've read about people managing to push similar things back in with chicks, with varying levels of sucess, but I'm not sure that's something I could do. Poor little chick, I wish I could help it, but I don't want it to suffer :(

Help! Chick hatched with unabsorbed yolk and intestines on the outside.

Thank you both for replying, it's hard to know what to do for the best. It seems amazingly bright and is pottering about cheeping but on the other hand I'm so worried it's suffering :( I've got a baby fast asleep on me right now so won't be able to do anything for the next hour or so but will...

Help! Chick hatched with unabsorbed yolk and intestines on the outside.

I had a chick hatch last night with the yolk still attached, it was very wet and had pipped at the wrong end. I tried to get it to sit in a cup, but it kept escaping so I just put clean paper towels down and left it overnight. It's about 15 hours since it hatch and the yolk looks like it has...

Came home to find feathers all over pen and this.....

I had a 5 week old chick with very similar injuries, really nasty head wound inflicted by another, bigger chick. I was really worried it wouldn't make it, but I gave it a wash with hibiscrub and used silver spray and it healed wonderfully, no infections or anything. I personally wouldn't want...

Chick with unabsorbed yolk and maybe intestines hanging out, please help!! *graphic photos*

Hi, I had a chick hatch late last night that really isn't looking great. There was a lot of liquid when it hatched and the yolk and some pink tube bits (look like intestines. It was still attached to the egg for a while bit pulled free. I tried to get it to sit upright, but my incubator is only...

They're so cute! The last one hatched, but it's yolk hasn't absorbed yet :hmm I've moved the other two to the brooder to give it some piece, I wanted to put it in a cup to finish absorbing it but my incubator isn't very tall, so the cups were either too big or small enough that it could escape...

They both seem well in themselves (the other one that hatched had the same thing) I wonder if it's related to them both hatching from the wrong end, I've not seen it before and it seems odd that they both have it and were both malpositioned. The third chick is struggling a little (also pipped...

Oh no! I'm so sorry. Just had a little one hatch this morning, one is zipping and the other is taking it's time! The one that hatched this morning has got a bit of a bloody umbilical cord that's sticking out a bit. I've read that it can happen sometimes and it should sort itself out, but I'm...
