    Missing her “lady parts”

Thanks all. If you have a veterinary university / teaching hospital in your vicinity I would definitely recommend using it, based on my experience. The same week we take the chicken back for a check up we also have to go to a specialist veterinary practice for a check up on our elderly cat who...

    Missing her “lady parts”

We must have one of the most expensive hens on the forum, but she is much loved! We noticed a couple of weeks ago that she had odd poop - very bright green and watery. She hadn’t laid for several months and is approx 4 years old. We have learned, sadly from experience, never to leave this and...

    Happy Chickens

Is it just me? When my chickens look like they’re happy their tails seem to get larger and then they ‘wag’ their tails. Instead of a thin tail, the tail gets wider.

    Next steps...healing, diet, boredom

I think it took a few weeks for the pin feathers to start appearing. But once they started the feathers grew back very quickly. I think having extra protein helped. I’m very sorry you have no other survivors.

    Next steps...healing, diet, boredom

Ok, been there in January 2018 with two chickens badly attacked by a dog. Here’s how we pulled them through after the vet stapled and stitched the skin back together again. Got a lot of excellent help from forum members. 1. It’s very cold here at night so as they lost so many feathers we...

    Gurgling chicken and Biaprim

Many thanks for that. Our normal vet was on holiday and the relief vet wasn’t too sure on treatment or dosage. She had originally said 5mm in 1 litre of water but our containers, which fit onto the Omlet run, hold around 3 litres. If we used smaller containers there was a risk they’d get...

    Gurgling chicken and Biaprim

Hi, we had to rush our large Sussex, Sammi, to the vet Christmas Eve as she was sneezing and gurgling very badly. The vet gave her an antibiotic and a steroid injection. She also gave us a bottle of Biaprim (Sulfadimethoxine and trimethoprim). We have been putting it in the water for the five...

    *HELP* TRYING TO INTEGRATE!!!

I followed Aarts advice and it worked very well. It took several months to get them to operate as one flock and we let them come together at their own speed. The older Sussex took the two new Sussex under her wing, so to speak. She made it very clear who was in charge. The older maroon took...

Merged two flocks and new coop

When bringing a new flock into an established flock I gave them time. Once they were past the quarantine stage I let then do there own thing. Gradually the two groups started to merge. When a couple of the new flock started to roost in the older flocks hen house I decided it was time to keep...

Would you feed this to your chicken?

Mine love any grubs they find.

    Molting, what to feed

I up the protein with cheese or minced beef, when it’s on special offer I stock up. I think they need much more protein to grow their new feathers. As they don’t lay when they moult I try to help the regrowth along to get them back laying.

    Automatic hen house doors

I have had an Omlet automatic door for almost a month now. It opens side to side and fits wooden coops, fence grills as well as their Omlet products. It is light sensitive but also has a clock mode as well. It works so well that I’m waiting for another offer so I can buy a second one to add to...

Leaves in chicken run turning black, good or bad?

I’ve asked OH that next time he uses the leaf blower to collect leaves he dumps the collected leaves into the hen house. Stupidly we’ve been dumping the leaves in the same place we dump weeds, deadheaded flowers etc!

    Omlet door - fantastic

We finally bought Omlet’s automatic sliding door. It fits to Omlet and other wooden hen houses as well as wire. It took a few days to get the light mode sensor fully calibrated. It works really well so I no longer have to get up at first light to open up the roost. Approx 15 to 20 minutes...

"Treats" that your birds don't like

My older girls eat blackberries but the younger ones were turning their noses up. Later they realised the older hens were eating a lot of the blackberries so they decided to give them a try. Yes, they now all love blackberries. They also love cherry tomatoes, cat food, meat - any especially...

    Possible Seizures?

Does her face turn purple? If yes it could be a heart problem.

Hen panting, white mouth corners, large abdomen

After what we’ve been through I would be concerned at any fluid in the abdomen as this could link to cancers or heart problems.

    Can’t lie down

Sadly she died when the vet was trying to find the underlying cause. She started to turn purple and fainting. Husband and vet got her quickly to a water bowl to help revive her ( which they have had to do a few weeks ago but it was too late. She had a seizure and I said euthanise now. By...

    Can’t lie down

Thank you. The vet will be coming here early evening. She also suspects a blockage of some sort and I’m also thinking tumours. Another chicken from the same supplier had to be euthanatised last year - the vet did an examination after and found her organs riddled with rumours.

    Beginning of Bumblefoot? Advice please

I would recommend going to the vets as that looks like it’s going to need to be opened to get the hard staff infection out.
