Australorp and Barred Rocks stopped laying completely? Also, eating eggs question.

I have a ~3 year old Australorp and two 2 year old barred rocks. Two of the best egg layers in the world. Normally we get so many eggs I'm desperately giving them away. They slowed down in winter but still enough that we could fill a carton in 4 to 5 days. Then a couple things happened. First...

    Malek and new chicks

I'm 90% sure they were vaccinated as chicks from the hatchery I got them from. I can't find the receipt though. They were already pullets when I got them and I've had them for a out 9 months. I do not know what to change to help them. And I want to add two more come fall (raised from chicks this...

    Malek and new chicks

Yes Marek, sorry. Phone wants to autocorrect it to whatever it thinks "Maleks" is. Can the others survive even if they're carriers? Can I never add more hens even if they never show signs or don't until next year? If I get vaccinated chicks and raise them inside for 3/4 months, would it ever be...

    Malek and new chicks

So I have three hens as backyard chickens. I'm pretty sure one is down with Malek and unfortunately did not have the means to separate her until today. She's been going downhill since about a week and a half. I think it is pretty impossible the other two will be carrying it now. It's not my...

Wanting to add another hen but fear for it and the others

I had four lovely hens. 1 barred rock and 3 australorps. The barred rock was my favorite and she suddenly passed away. I'm not sure what she died of, but both of her sisters passed at about 9 months old two years ago mysteriously. I had both the 3 barred rocks as pullets about 3 months old. I'm...

    How much pumpkin?

Apologize for the late response. The new birds are starting to go in at night occationally, but if the temp is bearable at all to them (last night was in the mid 20s) they just huddle up outside the coop. When they do go in the coop, they don't sleep on the roost, rather in the corner. My other...

    How much pumpkin?

I was also HOPING this would get their lazy butts out of the coop. Its 55 degrees and they're lazing in the coop like it is 30. Thinking of temporarily taking the food out of their coop during the day so they aren't just chowing down and sitting. The outside food is not far from the run so...

    How much pumpkin?

Well, not the rind part itself but the "meat" attached to it. I held it and they went nuts eating it. I have a certain pair of gloves I feed them with sometimes to bond with them. Once they see them they dont question the new food as much. Lol

    How much pumpkin?

We were carving and gave the 4 girls we have the left overs. They wouldn't touch it til I hand fed them. Now they're losing their minds over it. So, can there be too much of it at once? Can I store it and give them a bit daily? There is rine, guts, and some seeds that we didn't pick out for...

    Buying Pullets online?

I bought 3 this spring from Murray. I want to buy 3 more now and it is more expensive there. I found buy 3 of the same is cheaper on Cackle Hatchery, but I'm confused about when they will ship. It says chicks until sept. but I want the adult ones (15-20 weeks). However I can't see anywhere that...

Please help! I believe a bacterial infection is killing my girls!

Yes I am taking some steps with that. Since I don't have a separate coop I do have a large dog crate and plan to keep them in that for a bit but let them in the coop at night once Henocide is settled down. I'm not worried about Henocide, I worried about them. The guy who had adult hens sold them...

Please help! I believe a bacterial infection is killing my girls!

I have considered having 4 instead of 3 since I'm extending their run to a total of 232 sq ft. but 4 would really cram up the coop which is 16 sq ft. I have no way of building onto it or adding another coop to the set up, at least at this time.

Please help! I believe a bacterial infection is killing my girls!

Hello everyone, sorry I've been absent. Henocide is still alive and well... but like I said, so was the second one of the 3 I had die for 15 days after the first one's death. The guy I was in contact with has oddly stopped responding to me... I'm sure as a local farmer his hens would not be...

Please help! I believe a bacterial infection is killing my girls!

Also, is there some kind of pet safe disinfectant spray or something I can use? I can replace bedding and stuff, but I can't really clean the ground of the enclosure besides raking up as much droppings as I can.

Please help! I believe a bacterial infection is killing my girls!

I've found someone who is willing to sell me some 6 month old Barred Rocks, but I'm still afraid I'll spend the time and money and then a few days or weeks later my girl dies and now the new ones have it and they die too. Waste of time, money, and heart. Not sure how to even prevent this in the...

Please help! I believe a bacterial infection is killing my girls!

It took 15 days before the second one died and there wasn't any signs of it until she was weak. I'm just worried if I get two more, then they'll all get it and I'll get down to one chicken and have to repeat the process. I have nowhere I can quarantine separate. Maybe if I wait a week and she's...

Please help! I believe a bacterial infection is killing my girls!

I could maybe come up with something. I've thought about playing a radio or getting a mirror or some other trick used for pet birds.

Please help! I believe a bacterial infection is killing my girls!

Thank you for the support. It feels nice to have ppl who understand to talk to and seek advice from. I really hope their short lives were blissful up to the end. Now I just worry about this one being sad until she passes, which could be any day from what it seems

Please help! I believe a bacterial infection is killing my girls!

We completely cleaned it all out when the first one died. Used a mite spray but can you suggest a good disinfectant? We are going to do the same but it didnt seem to change anything. Thought it was 15 days between deaths. Idk how much longer I should wait for the 3rd. My chicken raising friend...
