Spock died today. There was no funny business, he just died. I remember thinking these past couple of weeks that I hadn’t heard him crowing. But I thought it was because he was just a couple weeks shy of his third birthday and he just didn’t feel like it anymore. Then yesterday I heard him...
This winter has been so mild with just two snowstorms. The last one dumped 11 inches. Crazy was that the day before the snowstorm it was 55 degrees! We have been so lucky!! The chickens have been able to free range all winter without too many days of being closed up and so far, no rats!
But...
Happy Thanksgiving...almost! DH and I are staying home. It’s weird, I never liked traveling anywhere, eating a bunch of food and then trying not to fall asleep at the wheel on the way home. So this year, when no one invited us, we were just as happy to stay here! I have my mom’s entire family...
So we didn’t get the foreclosure next door. At least I don’t think we will. The real estate agent was just removing the for sale sign so something’s up. I’m going to guess that the sucker they got to make the over-priced offer actually bought the house. But for some reason I don’t care. Spending...
This summer has been a time of reflection. I have listened to my third “oops” rooster Ted Baxter, crow and thought a lot about what I want to do. I have been feeling stuck.
We did make an offer on the foreclosure next door, but the bank rejected it because they got a sucker to offer full...
:) Yes, having that fence is great! It’s even greater as it appears that Meyer Hatchery has made yet another rooster mistake...that's 3 in 3 years. Oh boy. Imagine my surprise yesterday morning when I heard a very familiar croaking noise coming from under the Mulberry bushes. Below is...
The year before my mom died she started writing down all of her recipes for me. So today I made her Vermont maple baked beans. They were delicious. I don’t think that mine will ever be quite as good but the house sure smelled awesome! My Mom’s beans were predictable and always perfect. She...
That's beautiful Aart and it does apply... thank you. I'm sorry for your losses too... and I hope your June someday is better! I am not going to give up hoping for a June where I see all the beauty around me and my first thought is happiness. Never giving up....
I have two silver laced Wyandotte in a mixed flock of 34. My chickens range in age from 8 years to 8 weeks. My silver girls are a little bit dominant and they do lay very well. I also have a blue laced Wyandotte hen. She is rather mean and VERY broody. But she is really beautiful and quite...
June is a very unhappy month for me because it’s when my parents died. Then of course there is today, Father’s Day- the last bit of darkness before the light at the end of the tunnel called July. I wish that I could just enjoy June the way I used to. It really is the most beautiful month. The...
I would say no, chickens not pets. Our town considers them in the "livestock" category. I would say before you do it call and ask. :( That way you won't have to get rid of them... that would stink!
My oldest golden Lyla is nine and a half. She’s not a healthy dog. She starting having seizures at age five, was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at age 7 and Inflammatory Bowel Disease at 8 1/2. But she rallied and a year later she’s still here. Slow of foot and a bit wobbly from the mass amounts...
Training the chickens to use the rat-proof feeders was a little stressful because they got very hungry while learning! I felt like a bad chicken Mommy. But they are doing great now! All day long I hear the “bang” when the feeders shut tight after the chicken hops off. At first the chickens were...
The exterminator guy just left. Let’s call him X-Guy. He tried to talk me into at least putting down "ZP Tracking Powder" which is Zinc Phosphide based. I guess you squirt the powder in the holes. Nope....I declined. No poison. He also said that based on the multiple rats we entombed over the...
Oh man, the rats are back. And all of you who told me, when there is one, there is 50, you were right. I think I was in a state of denial.
While I am confident by the smell that we entombed multiple rats in the eaves of the building, one managed to get back into the coop a few nights ago. At...
I always used to spend Mother’s Day cooking for my mom. My mother loved “lobstah”. So that’s what we had. Lobster with Asparagus and Béarnaise sauce made with eggs from my chickens. Red Lobster-like recipe rolls with garlic, sharp cheddar cheese and butter, Greek salad and homemade apple pie for...
Last night as I cleaned out one of my flower beds, Crazy Lady drove past my house at a crawl with her beady eyes staring at me. Her pasty white face was etched in a hateful scowl. I smiled and did the old “scratch the side of my face with my middle finger” move. She’s angry because she’s afraid...
The beehive is here! When DH and I were placing it last night it was purely by chance at the same time Crazy Lady's husband was driving out their driveway. So I'm pretty sure that it was noticed as it is clearly visible from the road. I heard no music today when I was outside, just a very large...
That's so funny about Lucky Bundy!!! I didn’t know! This year coincidently I have little peeps Marcie Darcy and Kelly-my golden cuckoo Marans. Then Rhoda and Mary, my Blue Americaunas and my Black Australorps, Mrs. Cunningham and Joanie! Then I am caring for 14 more peeps that I will raise for...
The peeps are here, the peeps are here! Only hens ordered of course...but too soon to tell. It really does feel like Spring now. Puppy Mimi has Lyme disease. It was inevitable. My other dogs have had it, DH has had it and I have had it 3 times....if you believe in Chronic Lyme. Some people do...
