This is almost identical to the one I want to get for meat birds. Did you ever get it and how is it working out? My biggest concern is ventilation, but we will make it work. What modifications did you make to yours?
I plan on getting the 10 x 8 one with skylights from Sam's Club for meat birds very soon for under $1000. How has yours worked out? I just seems so ideal and is way cheaper than building one. Been there before to the tune of $2000...yikes.
Did you ever get some Sultans? We just ordered some from Meyer since they were the only ones we could find that had any and females at that. Now I'm researching where to find show quality, in hindsight.
Did you ever find out the real cause of death? I'm sorry for your loss. We've had so many over the last 3 years and didn't know why either. We just found 2 dead worms in a runny poop of a hen that is not quite right. The worms look just like yours. Do you know what kind they were? I want...
Are there any updates to this question? I have one really sick bird, so this might not work in time, and it looks like another needs treatment, so I'm just doing the whole flock of 15. I also used the Fogmaster Jr. which holds a quart of liquid and put it in faces last and air last night until...
I've had chickens for nearly three years now and have lived in Lake Orion for 13 years, but Oakland County my entire life. This weather is a once in a lifetime occurrence. I'm loving it because my chickens are. The last three years we've had our share of snow, so this record low is extremely...
The farmer (Howard Stack) down the road makes his own blend by adding soybeans and supplements to his corn. Layer is $10 for 50# and grower is $11.50. It's worth the 30 minute drive to get freshly ground.
Yay for Midland. Ferndale had their planning commission vote last night to take it to the city council as well. There is no good reason to keep somebody from raising three hens in their backyard even in the city...
Hi Jason,
I was at the Planning Commission meeting last night with my daughter and the Oakland County 4H Poultry Club. Things are looking good in Ferndale to make owning chickens legal to most of the residents. Hip Hip Hurray!! Everybody should have the right to own chickens if they have the...
I can relate to so much of the above, but because we love our chickies, we've invested much more than I ever thought I would. I thought it was going to be in the $500 range, but when labor and other costs were factored in, the price tag came to $2000 the first year. Then I wanted to improve on...
I'm in the process of researching this right now. I'm going to cover the top with wire since a fox just climbed over their fence and killed four chickens recently during the daylight hours. This will be my third summer with chickens. We sunk $2000 into the coop the first year and $1000 the...
What a beauty you have there. Her coloring looks nicely uniform to my untrained eye. I'm sorry for your loss too. Funny, the one that died of mine was also a GLW. hmmmm
They look like mixed breeds to me. They all have BR in them, but they have inconsistencies too, especially with the barring and leg color. Looks like a lot of roos to me based on the age and combs. Do any of them have a faint pink, smaller womb and wattle? At that 10 weeks, the girls should...
At 7 months old, you should be able to tell if you have a rooster. I say they are pullets that aren't ready to lay yet even without a photo. By three months old, I have been able to pick out all my roos.
I just posted an update on my Wyandottes which both turned out to be girls. But yours, it does seem to be a roo based on the aggression as well as bright red combs/wattles. They also seem large compared to mine.
As long as the first one is 100% barred rock, it is a female. If it is a mix, it could still be a roo since the barring can't be used as a sexing trait in mixes. The second one looks like a pullet. If you notice any charging, you may have a roo.
I just wanted to update this thread. Both Wyandottes are pullets. I believe that some Wyandottes DO appear to be rooish at an early age. They develop red combs and wattles at about a month old, but they don't enlarge too much like a male. By 3 months of age, I think, you should know if they...
