hello friends! we're on day 22 of our second broody hatch. our first went brilliantly, lucy the black orpington set 12 silver laced wyandotte eggs for us. at some point 1 disappeared - eaten? - and when we candled one was clear, which we removed. all ten hatched out beautifully on day 20! and at...
my bielefelder hens are sweethearts, they like to ask my tall girl for a cuddle before they go up to roost. one started laying at 7 months, the other just now at 8 months. they lay HUGE eggs and did right from the beginning. i give them fermented feed and i don't notice that they eat any more...
when did your bielefelders lay? mine are 7.5 months, just getting their combs, and not laying yet. being mid-winter one can hardly fault them, but my orpingtons and easter egger are going strong...

there MUST be more. we've finished the run and just putting finishing touches on the coop - currently have 1 rooster and 5 hens. it is lovely! they're just starting to lay.
hello wise deep-litterists
i have been using deep litter for a few months with my flock, in the coop, and to some degree out in the run, though i'm having trouble getting enough material in there! it breaks down so quickly. i'm about to go begging the neighbours for their autumn leaves.

thanks. blue's body does seem somewhat different to oliver, a cockerel with rust on his wings who has already crowed...but compared to robin, who is smaller with a single comb and the same body shape, blue's tail is pretty big!
i'll hold on for a while and see. the salmon colour isn't...
do either of these help?
blue is the bird just right of centre (oliver is blue's brother, second from left, and the little black easter egger, robin, their sister, next to him, left of centre.
on the far left, blue is behind oliver.
thanks for your thoughts!

hello friends.
so, a few weeks ago everyone figured that i had two female easter eggers and one male. the male crowed to confirm, but i'm uncertain about one of the three.
is this picture clear enough to see? the grey bird (blue) with salmon on its wings, just right of centre. if you look to...
that's a fine tale, and an even finer one is the happy ending to your rubber band story. our dear sweet lucy just ate one. i shall watch her. and the great recyclers!
okay, good to know. i'll keep watching and listening. their brother oliver was kind enough to educate us in what an early crow sounds like - metallic screeching! what do you think of the salmon colour on her wings?
