Any ideas what could have caused this?

Thanks. I don't have anything here like that unfortunately. Whatever she got, it was aggressive and very quick. Or at least that's what it looked like. I suppose it could have been something that was under strain and then just snapped, but organ failure doesn't tend to give high...

    Mites or Bordem?

That looks like pecking to me. You've probably got one of them that precious the others backsides. Often it's the (only) hen with the fluffy butt that's the culprit. If I'm right, there's not much you can do now until they moult and regrow. I also use a product with a bitter tasting spray...

    Is it time to euthanize?

Have you checked for ascites? Forgive me if you already have, but that would be the first thing that went through my mind as it sounds quite similar to the behaviour that you get. In which case it can be drained and with some antibiotics hopefully can give her a bit longer. I have to say I...

Any ideas what could have caused this?

Philly, my 5-Year-Old red sex link died yesterday evening. On Saturday, she was completely fine, scratching around and even laid her egg as normal. She went to bed and everything was normal. On Sunday morning however, I noticed she was a little bit lethargic and was sitting down quite a bit...

Chicken suddenly gone from absolutely fine to really unwell

One of my older girls was fine this morning. Boisterous (she's the queen) and running around. Later this evening I noticed her standing around and not running to greet me as normal. She's tail down, and slow. Her crop is ok and even more she's eaten some mash with vitamins and had water...

    Shaking head and green poop

    Brilliant! That's great news.

Prolapse - possible injury too (GRAPHIC)

Now a couple of days later and things have improved considerably. I think the canestan has worked well and thankfully now the urate discharge has stopped. That is making a huge difference. She's eating well and she's gone back onto the normal food that everybody else is eating and she's...

Prolapse - possible injury too (GRAPHIC)

The vent has stayed in! That's extremely good news. She's also produced some poop herself sitting the night. And, something I'm very pleased about, her crop was empty this morning. The less good news is that she's still leaking urates at about one drip every 10-15 seconds. The scaly build up...

Prolapse - possible injury too (GRAPHIC)

Thank you. I lubricated her anus and she managed to push a fairly big one out. So I think it's the issue that the urates are just dribbling out of her without mixing with the poop and effectively softening/lubricating it. I'm no expert on this but it would appear logical because it is...

Prolapse - possible injury too (GRAPHIC)

Thanks for the replies and encouragement. Today is a much better day. She's lively and interested in just about everything. She's eating well but she's very thirsty and the problem with that is if you don't restrict her water, she drinks too much and then starts regurgitating it. The urates...

Prolapse - possible injury too (GRAPHIC)

Excellent advice. Her prolapse is very messy. The urates are oozing out continually, so anything exposed get a coating on which goes hard. I clean and moisturise regularly. It's a tough old battle. She's perked up a bit since I last wrote.

Prolapse - possible injury too (GRAPHIC)

Sorry for the delay. I've been trying to catch up with many of the things I failed to do when taking care of Luna. Yesterday was a good day. Today not so much. She ate lots yesterday but no poop really came out of her. A big puddle of urates and a crop that isn't empty. So basically there's a...

Prolapse - possible injury too (GRAPHIC)

Thank you. She came out of the op well. She had about 10 stitches in total. She came home (very long drive...) but apart from the first hour where she was trying to settle, once she got comfortable, she just sat and watched the world go by and slept. At home, she ate well and drank. I kept...

Prolapse - possible injury too (GRAPHIC)

Thanks for the reply. I'm currently sitting in a cafe having driven 3.5 hours to the poultry vet. She's being operated on as I type this. Fingers crossed. I do realise there is a risk - the vet was very clear about that but her heart and lungs were strong and she's in fine fettle other than...

Prolapse - possible injury too (GRAPHIC)

Thank you. I managed to get a bit of it off yesterday. It was like a rubbery costing once the hard bits came off. I left a fair bit on but pushed the prolapse back in. It stayed in for about an hour and then she went to bed. This morning, she has pooped a lot but sadly it is out again. I...

    Sick ex batt

Oh no. I'm so sorry! I know that pain only to well and it is horrible. Your husband is right though. You saved her from being culled and she had a happy retirement thanks to you. As for vets, it's so difficult to find an avian specialist. I've found a few but they are not all open to doing...

She's had two already today.... Thanks. I'll cut back on it in that case.

Prolapse - possible injury too (GRAPHIC)

Yes, I suppose what I'm asking is do you go by the tablet content or the actual PPE calcium that would provide? The difference is that it's 1.5 tablets of the former and 3 of the latter.

Prolapse - possible injury too (GRAPHIC)

Thanks. Yes, I've been using vaseline but the prolapse is so wet (as in tissue wet) that it doesn't stick. I found Manila honey better. I'll try spraying her. It's nighttime that's the issue. That's when the urates stick and go hard. Just to be clear, do you agree about the dosage? The...
