Thanks for the posts dont know whether to buy more hens or just give up and keep the ones we have left or at least hopefully keep the 8 we have left. Love having them and watching them in the yard but can not continually afford to spend $7-$10 per laying bird just for the hawk to get. Do you...
Around two months ago I had a hawk attempt to get to the Banties in a rabbit hutch/cage. did not work about a month later went out to do lock up and missing a Australorp now around a month later we had just gotten a 4" snow, had to clear off an area for the chickens to come out. Went to lock...

We got a Black Australorp rooster when he was a year and he is calm and collective, the first couple times my 6 y.o picked up her hens he came after her and then I chased him with a broom and never another problem now we can pick him up to do care on him in the coop. I have always...
I too am dealing with fowl pox at this point, most of the cases have been dry pox but have had one case of wet pox which sounds more in your direction. Will be interested in what you figure out.

Congrats on getting the nerve, I have one that needs to be done and wasn't going to do it since he will never be shown but I might now b/c of the frost bite issue you mentioned.
Kirksville, MO here have 3 SLW, 3 RIR, 3 Black Australorp hens & 1 rooster, and a white hen that a clover kid needed a home for. Will be looking for show quality chickens come 2011, dont know what breeds yet as the girls have not decided, I do know we are looking for mainly pullets d/t I dont...
Everybody has there favorites, first and foremost most chickens DO NOT lay an egg every day sometimes they do but it does not go on for a long period of time. A good laying chicken will lay 2 eggs every 3 days. Then you have to account for moulting that they will slow down if not quit laying...
I would hold off on culling her as well, this summer we had one that the rooster bit/pulled on the leg. Could not see any injury but she would not walk or move. We seperated her off and put feed and water where she could get to it and there was several times that I thought culling was best...
Yes you should up the humidity to at least 65-70% Ducks require a little higher humidity than others b/c of the prolonged hatching, after a duck egg pips which looks like will be very soon it will take up to three days for them to hatch dont hurry them they take a lot longer than chickens and...
You can buy a cheap accurite digital combination thermometer/hyrgrometer at Wal-Mart for around $7, but regardless of what you buy for a hygrometer make sure you callibrate it b/c I dont care how expensive or cheap most will be off...
You can hand turn them all but I dont know even if you remove the turner that all 66 eggs will fit in the bator floor. If it was me I would add water until you get it up to around 50-55 I think 45 is on the verge of to low... Like you said though you will have to have a hatcher to move the 44...
I agree with Shellyd2008 they are a lot slower to hatch than chicks, the last batch I done took anywhere from 2-3 days to hatch. I would let them be and get the humidity up to the 70's and wait. Good Luck!!!
I think you should still have a good shot at it. The fact that you are hatching shipped eggs is more against you than the faulty thermometer, if you get a 50% hatch with shipped eggs you are doing good. If you have an LED flashlight go to the bathroom and candle the eggs you will be able to...
mlove: you should lock down on the night of the 10th or the morning of the 11th, your lockdown date is technically the 11th. You should try to get your humidity up to 65%. If you get it above 60% all will be good. Your hudmidity will go up as chicks hatch and dry. If it gets so high that...
