    Egg shells or no?

Just a thought on your comment. Chickens relish eating all sorts of things that I would not even consider. Mealworms, earthworms, mice, come readily to mind. Just because we would not eat it doesn't necessarily mean the chickens would not love having it.

    Growing grass

The original question was about organic seed, I think because they put all kids of chemicals in grass seed now ( I can't even walk down those aisles at big box stores.) Your question is valid about what is already there. if they have not already completely denuded their run it may be possible to...

    Feeding Acorns to Chickens

Lots of things are fans of acorns. I read a book where the characters had pigs fattening up for winter in the oak forest on acorns so I brought acorns to my friend who had pot bellies. Also that year ( had so many acorns and no chickens) I brought a huge bagful to this sort of wildlife/zoo place...

    Growing grass

For my chicken planters I used a clover mix (no grass at all, I don't think) that I got from Tractor supply in the deer hunting aisle. It"s for attracting the "big bucks" or some such. Since my chickens go mostly for the clover when they get out of their run that's what I planted. hope this...

    Sprouts

Yes, if you offer chicks anything but chick starter you need to offer grit.

What treat did your chickies get today?

Mine got the generous rind of a cantaloupe with its seeds back in it and broken eggshells and of course their bribery mealworms to get back in the coop after their backyard "free-range time".

    Feeding Acorns to Chickens

I do not know, but I will ask the neighbor whose house it is and if they don't know I'll post pic of tree, leaf, acorn. They are very old trees, historic neighborhood, so sometimes we don't know what we inherited with a property.

Oh and here are what my BLRW turned out looking like. I personally like the look of the one with more red and white (her blue is not so blue).

Food/Water in the Coop? What Do You Do?

Yes, my coop is new and I only have a chicken corral, not a predator proof run, so my girls get locked up at night in the coop. Once we get the run done, I plan on Ft. Knox!, we plan to leave pop door open and will cease food and water in coop.

Food/Water in the Coop? What Do You Do?

I also keep food and water in the coop. same idea, I don't get out there when they first get up so I feel they should have something to do till I do! I only have 8 so I just use a plastic quart sized chick feeder and waterer. seems to be plenty, it's never even close to empty, but they do eat...

    Feeding Acorns to Chickens

My chickens were free ranging in the city and were found by a friend "crossing the road" (and almost getting hit by a fedex truck in the process) to go eat smashed acorns under the neighbor's tree. No rinsing done, unless it had rained. They seemed to think it was a worthwhile endeavor.

    What is BOSS??

They were just slapping themselves in the forehead because they didn't know what BOSS was, but had black oil sunflower seeds already, just had probably never abbreviated it. Oh and Welcome to BYC!!
