Yeah, the official law is 2, but as long as you dont live in a subdivision or any neighborhood that has an association you should be OK. Giving eggs to your neighbors helps keep people from turning you in.
Good luck.
Welcome to the world of chicken ownership! they are good fun and a good source of breakfast.Other feed stores to be aware of: Nanakuli has a nice little feed store off of Hakimo road, and Waimanalo has a huge feed store that is great too! Good excuse to go for a drive in the country.... Once...
Thank you all, I will try some of your suggestions. Lettuce ball, soda bottle with holes drilled, and letting them out to free range in the evenings will be my first 3 experiments. Although they like to sit at the screen door and look in at us when they are out. It freaks me out a little, makes...
When I decided to keep backyard chickens, I was greatly concerned about disturbing my neighbors since I live in a sub and am not supposed to keep poultry. I thought by avoiding roosters I would have have sweetly clucking hens that wouldn't disturb anyone. I know they make a bit of a fuss when...
Nice setup. You know the chickens will destroy all plant life in their run. My run used to have a beautiful patch of wild sweet potato greens, they pecked it to death and now its just dirt and palms. They even killed the centipede grass!
Like the coop!
I go to the feed store in Nanakuli, they have organic feed, might have non medicated chick food. Prices are good and is easy to find with google maps. Good luck!
OK, this may sound weird, but I think my chickens think I am their mate.
Ever since they have started laying eggs (mature females) they have started doing this weird thing where they hunch down and hold their wings out slightly and freeze in that position whenever I reach down to pet them. I...
I never thought I would have to explain the reproductive habits of a chicken so many times. At least 3 times a week I have people ask me "how are you getting eggs if there is no rooster?" . If it's a woman asking I remind them that they reproduce eggs regularly too, even if there is no man...
They are big and healthy. Have been laying eggs about 6 days/week. Only problem is they like to squak whenever they see me. Fortunately our yard is walled in and the neighbors dont seem to hear them (I asked..). Saw your pics, wish I could get away with having that many birds. Nice flock!
We dont have mongoose up here, thank goodness. I asked the chicken expert guys at Waimanalo feed store about predators, they said that mongoose will only attack small chickens (they are attracted to the peeping) but grown birds are not at risk. I dont think they burrow under fences, but a well...
Lester,
Where did you find legal information regarding zoning and allowable amounts of chickens, I live in Makakilo and couldnt find anything regarding "chicken laws".
Mahalo,
Kevin
Another vote for Hawaii! I grew up in michigan and have been living in Hawaii for 13 years. You can customize your location to suit your lifestyle. Dont like it too hot? find a place that is above 1000 ft elevation. We live at 1000 ft and we sleep with blankets every night and dont even have AC...
Awesome, you'll love it. How many and what kind did you get? I have 3 rhode island reds and they all started laying eggs 2 weeks ago. do you have your brooding pen set up? What are you going to do for a coop? I went off the deep end with my coop, it weighs a ton. If you look at all the coop...
