    Craigslist

We are in IL, we bought chickens off Craigslist with no problem and we have sold twice on Craigslist. Everything worked out fine for us.

    Emotionally Attached :(

In case it helps - our coop square footage is capable of holding 13.5 chickens and the run is even bigger than the coop. We have 19 chickens total. What would you do in this situation? Give them away? Keep them?

    Emotionally Attached :(

I'm having an emotional dilemma - any words of support or wisdom would be greatly appreciated. 3 years ago we started our first flock with 5 little chickens and it has grown and grown since. Currently we have quite the arrayed coop of 19 chickens from almost 3 year to 1 year old. We bought 6...

black smelly yolks, who can help?!

Thanks for the input, could you explain what you mean by the bloom bring disturbed? Sorry, I'm fairly new at this and we've had great luck so far. Thanks in advance!

black smelly yolks, who can help?!

Hey y'all, we've cracked 3 eggs from our backyard within the last week that have had black, horrendous smelling yolks. They are not old eggs and we do not have a rooster so they can be fertilized. I am not sure if they came from the same hen or different ones. What could be happening?! Just 2...

    broody and bald

The problem is we have no roosters so she is going to be trying to hatch them for a looong time. She keeps going to the same box, would it be a good idea to block that box?

    broody and bald

Hey all, I have quite the broody austral or on my hands. We have been physically removing her from the box to encourage her to go with the rest of the flock but she keeps returning. My biggest concern though, is that her belly is bald. It looks like it has molted and she has some red and sore...

Hawk sitting in backyard, eyeing birds in tractor....

Yikes! How scary, I'm always worried about the same thing. Around here we call them the chicken hawks. We use our dogs as protection too, they sure know what we mean when we say "go get it!" as we let them out. They are labradors so they wouldn't hurt a fly, but the prey never knows that!

    When to move???

Try putting them together in the same coop but with a barrier. We put our metal dog crate inside of our coop to get them comfortable. This way they can all see and get used to each other, but not hurt each other, and they all have access to food and water. We did that for about a week and a half...

    New Chicks - Old Chickens

Yes - but it will take time. Probably a couple of weeks even. They will adjust! We have everything from 3 years to 5 months in our coop. They don't like it at first, but they figure it out!

    Crazy Penelope (Flew the Coop!)

Dog crate, food bait and trail cam?? Haha! It might be crazy, but it just might work! Bait her with scraps into a dog crate (or some other large container) and with surveillance (whether personal, trail cam, etc.) when she goes in, go out real quiet and close her in. Obviously face it away...

Does this make me a terrible chicken owner?

We have just under 2 acres, so it's a decent amount of property but definitely not a ton. They mostly stay off to the side lot we own, it is always the oldest ones that are in my landscaping, on my porches, etc. Once we put in new mulch anywhere, though, they all come running! I have more mulch...

    Introducing new chicks

We put our metal dog crate inside of our coop to get them comfortable. This way they can all see and get used to each other, but not hurt each other, and they all have access to food and water. We did that for about a week and a half then we started slowly letting the littles range with the bigs...

Does this make me a terrible chicken owner?

Ol Grey Mare, thanks. Once we downsize their time outside the coop and run will be much more limited. I think my biggest reservation is keeping all 21 inside right now, I don't want them to be too crowded. Even though our square footage says its acceptable, I know I wouldn't want to be squished...

2 year oldhen getting pecked on

If they begin to draw blood, then you will have problems. Once they see blood they are brutal. How many chickens do you have? We had good luck with Old MacDonald Stop that Pecking spray that we found at our local supply.

Does this make me a terrible chicken owner?

Sabz, it's really funny that you posted this. I hadn't even looked at this thread in a few days but the conclusion my husband and I came to was exactly that! Chicken keeping has become much more of a chore than the fun hobby it started out as. That being said, we are going to let them range and...

Does this make me a terrible chicken owner?

We have a flock of 21 birds with plenty of coop and run space. They have been allowed to free range pretty much every day, all afternoon and evening. It's getting to the point though, that they are destroying everything in my yard and garden, and starting to make me resent them for it. It's...

    Culling a single bird

Hi all - unfortunately it looks like we are going to be culling a bird when my husband is home for the weekend. We've just got a bad egg so to speak. She is broody, eating eggs, won't leave the coop, aggressive towards us and a big bully to the others. It's creating a bad dynamic. Is there...
