Yeah, I should have noted my husband went and bought the poly sheeting already and has it mostly installed. It wasn't until this morning that I noticed so now I'm just wondering if I'll need to mitigate the heat/sun or if it should be okay with natural shade
We live in the mid-atlantic and get a lot of heat, but our yard is pretty well shaded and our coop does have several hours of shade each day from near tall trees. We are finally getting rid of our tarp/plywood roof and my husband is putting on a beautiful clear polycarbonate roof, but I started...
Yeah, I'd feel a lot better if it was a seasoned broody or at least longer in her cycle, but its killing me to have eggs hatching in an incubator and a broody going un used
I have a BCM pullet who is about 9 months old and just started laying last month. She's gone broody already. I'd try to break her but I actually have a clutch of eggs in an incubator now so the timing is actually okay. The thing is, she's been broody for about 48 hours and the chicks are...
I was wondering about that. Honestly I didn't because I paid for 6 and they shipped 9. So, I don't feel like I'm owed anything. And I've bought shipped eggs dozens of times--these were well-packed by any standard, so I really think it came down to mishandling. I don't think the breeder was at fault.
Thanks all--I'll set them and throw a few of ours under her for good measure and wish for the best then. This is all really helpful (and somewhat hopeful).
And they did look okay under candle, but I was only looking for cracks--I really can't figure out what I'm looking for with air sacks before...
We have a broody and were planning on hatching some of our fertile eggs under her as well as a few shipped breeder eggs to get some lavender orps in our flock. The shipped eggs got here today and while they looked well packed 3 out of 8 were broken. Pretty good breaks, too, not just cracks. My...
We have 8 different breeds--lots of variation in who we like and why, but my favorite just from a personality perspective are--by far--our bielefelders. Man, they are essentially like dogs. I know some folks dont like them because they eat so much, but they are incredible layers and are the...
We purchased 2 sets of eggs on line. One got here today and one set might still be a couple weeks away. We intended on hatching both in an incubator, but today (a freaking miracle) one of my orps went broody. If she is still broody tomorrow, we'll shift the set of eggs we have settling on the...
I know these are supposed to be auto sexing, but I'm just not sure here. I thought for sure *she* was a *she* but just today I noticed her saddle feathers and tail starting to stand out from the rest. Born in July, so possibly point-of-lay hen? Or is *she* a *he*?
So as you can see this is far better than it was yesterday when she was a mobile. I'm half tempted to go stuff her out under the broody's tonight so she can just integrate a little more seamlessly. Any thoughts on how long I should keep her out of gen pop?
