NZ / Rex Rabbit Grow Out

Too bad you are not near me. I would take that freckled one in front in a heartbeat! In spring I hope to get a nice trio.. haven't decided on breed yet. I kind of like the Silver Fox after seeing the thread on here.

    Help. Killing a Bird, Duck

I think chopping off the head is the quickest, "nicest" way.

    Venison....

A family friend got me a button buck. I haven't heard of many people having much luck though in my area.

How to dispose of annoying dogs

There was a thread about an outdoor cat here and someone suggested food dye in a water gun and something horrible smelling like deer or coyote urine, etc. When the dog comes back hot pink and reeking, they will KNOW their dogs are unwelcome!

Do you ever get used to the flapping of the wings?

Once they have no head I can reason with myself and say "It's just nerves.. look! It has NO HEAD!" The flapping really never bothered me. After about 3 of 16 I didn't even notice it too much.

    SO mad! Darn Neighbor's Cats!

Quote: I have to disagree here. My stepmom has taken in SEVERAL *feral* cats, earned their trust and they have lived strictly indoors without an ounce of protest. Two of our 5 cats were outdoor strays. The one never tries to go outside and the other ones tries to escape all the time but too...

    Ducks: Taste and Raising Questions

Perhaps it's all in the way they're raised but I tried Pekin duck last weekend (plain roasted breast meat) and as soon as it hit my tongue I almost threw up. First time THAT'S ever happened! It was sweet and gamey and tasted a bit like a pond smells. It was truly repulsive. I'll still raise some...

racoons are so tame its scary, you have to read this

It's a bad idea to feed an wildlife. The next person may not be so understanding of a "friendly coon" just wanting some table scraps and may shoot it and have it tested for rabies thinking something's wrong. There's just no reason to make friends with any wild animal. They need to stay wild and...

    SO mad! Darn Neighbor's Cats!

Sorry if it's already been said (I didn't read thru all posts) but can you file a complaint with animal control? I don't think shooting it is the answer. It's not the cat's fault, it's the stupid owner that has decided her cats need to be outside. As a "mom" to 2 strictly indoor cats, nothing...

    Can I join the club?

I'm really good with aiming and hitting the target on thefirst whack with a cleaver/hatchet/ax so I do the chop method. I would like to do cones and slitting just to compare but unfortunately I have an aversion to necks and blood (cant even watch my dogs get blood drawn from the jugular or I'll...

S F Meat Rabbit vs Cal/NZ Meat Rabbit Grow Out

Thanks for the website! I'll go look at that and read up about it. I was going to feed alfalfa for protein and then go to oat/brome/timothy/orchard grass mix for the adult breeders. Square bales are pretty cheap around here and my dad has a few really good contacts where he buys hay for his...

S F Meat Rabbit vs Cal/NZ Meat Rabbit Grow Out

My thoughts were to pasture my future rabbits and offer hay and such in winter. I'd rather not feed pellets and that way they could grow out a bit longer if necessary at no additional cost. I'd like to start with a flemish doe and a NZ buck and maybe a CA/NZ doe to compare with.

Sad Day... Dog killed 37 meaties

I have 2 beagles but if they had ever killed future chickens, I'd stop raising poultry vs getting rid of my dogs. I guess if the dog doesn't mean anything then it's fine to get rid of it but birds mean less to me than my family.

Meaties raised to feed Dogs/Cats, thoughts?

Quote: Please don't feed live. It's INCREDIBLY cruel and inhumane, not to mention your cats are going to sustain some nasty bites. Yes I know that's the way it happens "in the wild" but those animals have a fair chance to get away. Putting a mouse in a bathtub or a bathroom and letting the cat...

Meaties raised to feed Dogs/Cats, thoughts?

My 20 lb dogs eat raw bones. They are DESIGNED to eat raw meat.. that's what those impressive teeth are for in their mouths. If your dog gulps food then you can remedy that by teaching her to "chew" by offering a piece about half the size of her head that she has to work at. Once a dog starts to...

Meaties raised to feed Dogs/Cats, thoughts?

2-3% of their ideal adult body weight is what you should be feeding. Sometimes active dogs require 4% and sometimes less active, older, or obese animals need to eat alittle less than 2%. I am actually getting ready to raise chickens for my 2 dogs and 2 cats in the spring. I feed LOTS of venison...

How much do you charge for your chicken meat?

My neighbor wants to buy some off me too when I'm ready next year but I was thinking along your lines, Kassaundra, about the liability issue. I just told him to give me fruit off his trees for a few chickens and we're even.
