    Cockoo Maran Died :-(

Quote: It really hasn't been too terribly hot here. Maybe a little humid. At night it's getting down into the upper 50's low 60's. During the day it's been maybe 80. The coop is completely open at the eaves in the front and back. Front faces East. (wire clothed in, of course) So ventilation...

    Cockoo Maran Died :-(

Thanks Duramaxgirl... She was 16 months old and I dewormed the flock back on April 27th. Do you think I need to do it again?

    Cockoo Maran Died :-(

I guess I'll start at the beginning. Back in March, we found one of our Orpingtons out in the run dead. We examined her and found no outward sign of any injury, pecking, attack etc. We buried her, kept a close eye on the rest of the flock and hoped it was just a fluke. Fast forward to 2 nights...

Very bad Prolapse... is it too late??? GRAPHIC PIC

Hello cockadoodlefarm.... The warm baths did work for us. From my experience, the crust on my girls' prolapse was from a scab. The warm water helped soften it and keep it clean from any dried poop. Also make sure to use some PrepH and push the prolapse back in. My girls' took about 3-4 days of...

Very bad Prolapse... is it too late??? GRAPHIC PIC

Well... Gaby's prolapse was back out this morning Tried to put it back in this morning and this afternoon it was back out. I guess only time will tell if we'll be able to help her. I was so hopeful after last night's bath/sugar treatment. We'll be doing another soaking and sugar treatment tonight.

    Girl Fight?

I've seen some of my 13 month old girls doing this too... Buff orpingtons vs. Barred Rocks. But no one has ever REALLY gotten hurt. It's always just been a small pecking order scuffle and usually only at treat time.

Very bad Prolapse... is it too late??? GRAPHIC PIC

Tonight I gave Gaby another warm soaking bath. She seemed to enjoy it as much as a chicken likes being wet. But she tolerated it. I whipped together a sugar/water mixture as it has come highly recommended by y'all. I'm telling you.... IT WORKS!!!!!!! We slathered her up and gently pushed her...

Very bad Prolapse... is it too late??? GRAPHIC PIC

OK... that's good to know. We've only been treating for less than 24 hours and have only tried pushing it back in twice. We'll try again before bed and see how Gaby does

Very bad Prolapse... is it too late??? GRAPHIC PIC

Quote: Thanks for the advice and great thread. How many times a day did you try to push the prolapse back in? And how long before it actually stayed in? Gaby (the chicken) is in our pitch dark basement with a red heat lamp, food, water and oyster shells. I just gave her some scrambled egg and...

Very bad Prolapse... is it too late??? GRAPHIC PIC

Thanks Dawn! Here's a picture of what I'm talking about. DH actually thinks she's looking a little better/smaller than yesterday. This is after her second warm soaking and 2nd PrepH treatment. She's still eating, drinking and pooping. The black definitely looks like a scab, now that you mention...

Very bad Prolapse... is it too late??? GRAPHIC PIC

Last night I noticed one of my girls was very messy in her back end area. My husband and I brought her in for a warm soak and set up the ER brooder. We managed to get a good amount of poop cleaned off of her but noticed a sizable prolapse (like 1-2 inches out of her vent) Not all of the skin is...

    What are you canning now?

Earlier this summer we canned some pickling cucumbers for the first time. They turned out DELICIOUS!!! We'll vary the recipe next year since we found it to be just a little too salty. But last week we canned some of my famous applesauce and apple butter. I haven't tried the apple butter yet...

New layers and they don't know where to lay

I had the same problem (no older hens to teach the pullets where to lay). I put wooden eggs, roughly the same size as real eggs, in each nesting box. For the first couple weeks I would very occasionally find an egg on the coop floor right in front of the nesting boxes (I actually watched some...
