    What made you happy today?

Had to go to work today, but what makes me happy Every morning is chicken chores and the benefits. It's rainy, windy and 48 degrees. I love greeting the birds as they come out of the coop, into the run, which is a geodome. Quick cleanup of the coop every morning, then sit in the run with the...

    Hardware cloth?

Count how many squares in an inch. It looks to me like 1/8" hardware cloth (8 squares per inch)

    Baby girl is so sick

I would just hold her in my arms and sing to her. My chickens like this modified version: You are my Sunshine My (insert their name, I'll use my Annalee's) Sunshine. You make me happy, when skies are rainy snowy, sunny or gray. You'll Always know dear, how much I love you. Your my Annalee...

3 yr Buff has no appetite

By other things, I meant seeds and grains, omelettes with oats and greens like collards and kale. I've mixed scrambled egg in with mash of their regular pellets. And I do buy watermelon for them, X-rays and scans didn't show any issues. e does seem to borderline ready to molt with a few small...

3 yr Buff has no appetite

She stopped laying, when she stopped eating. Two vets examined her, and ruled out eggbind and waterbelly. Waterbelly was my first thought, so I picked up Braveheart and her sister Maizie, sitting with one on each side of my lap for comparison, and there was no difference.I checked everything I...

3 yr Buff has no appetite

I have Braveheart, a 3 yr 4 month old Buff Orpington hen, On July 23, in the early evening when I brought out treats I noticed that she didn't come over, but just watched the other birds. When she stood up, I noticed she was walking slowly. She also had a little bit of purple tinge to just...

Should I trust the vet for crop issue?

In the xray, it looks like a pop top from a soda can, or is that something else?

    During the Egg Song

I'm basically the roo, and mother hen, but even when I'm sitting outside the coop, most of mine sing after laying. I love to hear them.

    During the Egg Song

So we are all familiar with the Egg Song, but one thing I've always noticed is that when my hens come out of the coop singing their egg some, they also go around picking up leaves and other objects and throwing them on their backs, or behind them as they walk. I suppose I could google the...

    Preserving Your Harvest

We canned a bunch of dilly beans over the last two days. Have canned a bunch of apple sauce, and last week got a whole case of bananas that were set out with the compost I pick up daily at our local food project. There were probably 30 or more bunches. I gave some away, saved a few bunches for...

EMERGENCY HELP (Warning graphic photos) My 6mo old Copper Maran was attached by squirrels

Hoping for the best for your girl. Sometimes they amaze us with their will and strength. If you don't mind my asking, what was the scenario. Did you witness the attack, and how many squirrels? I have a few that come to steal the chicken food and never thought they might be a threat. If anything...

12 week old with under-developed tongue

Thank you for asking about her. I knew there was a risk of salmonella, but I cleared out the mucus and put my mouth over her beak and gave her breaths, and compressed her abdomen, not knowing if that was the right thing to do. I was desperate. she has learned to maneuver food with her beak, so...

    Biting Hen under certain circumstances.

Thanks, I hold them for a long time, and there is usually another waiting to be held. They don't often do the shake, but once in a great while. It's when I'm picking another one up, that Braveheart will sometimes come over and bite. I figured it's a protective thing.

Losing My Girls, not in a tragic way

So to start this thread, I am a 71 year old softheart who just finished bawling his eyes out. No one died or was injured, and people who don't have chickens probably wouldn't understand. I lost my two girls tonight. I've been trying to figure out how to make it happen, but didn't really want it...

    Biting Hen under certain circumstances.

I have hens that peck my pants legs when they want to be picked up, which is fine. I spend countless time holding my chickens, and have had up to 3 on my lap at one time. I do have one hen, Braveheart who, back in the spring would occasionally run over and bite my hand while I was picking up...

    Biting hen

Some of my birds peck am my leg to let me know they want to be held. They could sit in my lap all day, but there is always another one waiting in line for a turn. I do have some issues with one that bites sometimes under certain circumstances, concerning other birds, which I am going to post about.

Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

Currently dealing with bumblefoot on one of my easter eggers. Pretty traumatizing for both of us. Will post about it later, and ask for some advice.
