I have never had a problem with my hens jumping the fence. They will run back into their pen if they feel threatened. They don't even venture very far from the pen and will go into the hen house to lay eggs and then back out to play.
They can begin laying as soon as 16 weeks. Never expect an egg a day and you will be satisfied. I have 7 hens and average 4 eggs a day but not everyday. Chickens are easy to please. Keep them happy and healthy and you will enjoy your experience.
I have always wanted chickens. I didn't convince my family until I was so old it is hard work for me now. I love every minute of it! I have seven hens and will be getting a couple more soon. I love watching them interact with each other and me. One of Gods creations, the chicken!
Wow! I have two older hens that are molting and they used to lay brown eggs and are now laying crème colored or almost white eggs. I have read here that is normal and the eggs will darken up again. I don't have any idea how your hens did this but enjoy it, they may quit laying all together for...
Love your avatar! I started with two hens of four breeds. It has worked well for me and of course I picked my favorites of those breeds. We never have enough and so this spring I plan on adding two more of two different breeds and two more barred rocks. We personally like the brown egg layers...
I had an egg eater for a very short while. lol. I always found broken egg shells in the nest box with just the contents eaten. Got rid of that sucker quick.
It was 71 here yesterday and I got four eggs, three from easter eggers and one from sex link. I have 7 hens and we are just finishing up molt for 4 older hens.
So sorry! But don't give up on all chickens. With 25 years experience I know you can get them going again. And maybe bring in some new breeds this summer. Like Barred Rock ( mine have layed all winter) and red sex link ( there again, short break for molt and laying again) and old standard always...
My three anericaunas began laying at 26-27 and 28 weeks. Since then they lay every other day. Their first eggs were peewee size and so cute. But they are now up to small and one is laying medium size. They will get bigger as they mature more. My oldest americauna has almost stopped laying as she...
I am in east Texas too..I set my timer for 4:00 am to 7:00 am. I only use it in the morning hours and my eggs have doubles since doing so. I have eight hens, three molting, and average 4 eggs a day since using the light.
Wow nice coop..your investment will pay off soon, those girls will be very happy to give you plenty of eggs since you are giving them such a nice hen house.
My EEs did the same thing and each night we would go out and put them on the roost in the hen house. After three nights when they say us coming they would run in by themselves and get up on the roost. Two of my EEs laid their first eggs at 26 weeks and the third laid on 28th week. I think you...
My queen of the roost is very sick, I have done all the treatments I have read about on this site. She is still very sick and not moving away from a nesting box. Yesterday she got on the ramp out to the pen and threw up watery liquid. Gobs of it. I can not get her to drink or eat..She is my...
