Hi Fellow Chicken Folk -
I live in South Africa which can get down to 0 degrees centigrade in winter and often reaches 30 degrees in Summer, and have a small flock of 16 Potch Koekoeks, of which two are roos. I only get four eggs a day and would like to add a second - separate - flock to boost...
Hi All
I have a flock of 12 Potch Koekoek girls and two Roosters and my dominant male suddenly fell over onto his side three days ago.
He shivered for a short time and then seemed perfectly normal, though unable to rise. We have no vets that deal with chickens in my area so kept him warm...
Does anyone have firsthand knowledge of Rhubarb leaves being problematic for chickens?
I've learned that the oxalic acid in the leaves is toxic to humans, but I've given my flock rhubarb leaves in the past and they love them!
Thanks!
That is very true, and thanks again.
Tried to candle a few mins ago, but it's dush here now and another hen is sitting on them. I might just get lucky..
I think the hen will avoid the eggs now because the living chick cannot accompany the hen up the ladder and into the coop.
The eggs are still there, and I was contemplating putting them under the hen when she roosts under the coop in a few minutes. Thoughts?
Unfortunately the heat lamp idea...
Yes, she'd left the nest entirely, going down a little ladder that she could not return up with the chick.
I went out to have a look after we chatted, and she and the chick were sleeping under the coop. I had a look inside and the two remaining eggs had disappeared, but there was another hen...
Yep -
Figured I'd possibly done more harm than good, but the eggs were cold, so I dived in. Dang.
Right, will do the damp towel thingy right now - thanks for the advice. Let's prey for beginner's luck, eh? :-)
Hi All -
A hen has just hatched one of the four eggs she was sitting on, leaving the other three intact. After several hours, I grew concerned for the remaining eggs and popped one under another hen, which had just decided to brood nearby.
She gave the intrusive egg one peck and ignored it...
They are. Me? Not so sure..! ;-)
Try this fella - I have used him before but he will only send a large qty of day olds as chicks tend to die in courier vans. Perhaps he has a contact/method to help you...

I'm having their coop scrubbed from top to bottom (and back again) in a few minutes and I'll check fr any damp patches, mould, etc.
One question on the meds - have I perhaps got the wrong stuff, since this makes no mention of chickens and actually lists the animals it should be used on? I'd...
I managed to get Terramycin / LA from Pfizer which is injectionable, but there is no mention of chickens on the packaging and on the directions sheet it states to use only for cattle, swine, sheep and goats.
Obviously there are no dosage levels indicated either...
Any ideas, pls?
