Thanks sourland!
I wondered about the mixed-breed being an issue. I guess I was getting concerned that it seems to be so many weeks, but they will lay on their own schedule. I appreciate your feedback.
Hi--
I have an easter egger mix (bantee and easter egger, presumably) that used to crow like a rooster (I kid you not) at 20 weeks. But then she became my first layer...of adorable green eggs at about 22 weeks. She laid for about four weeks, then went broody. I broke her of it and she started...
The one in the middle looks like a brown leghorn to me, but there are others who are more expert than I am on breeds.
Also, regarding the "egg song"...there is a classic sound that many hens make. Now, to confuse things, my first layer (a mix of easter egger and bantam something) actually...
For starters, her feathering is very much a hen. Roosters would have very long, thin, shiny feathers on their necks and tails (hackles and saddle feathers, respectively). The tail feather would be tall and curved as well. Your girl has wide, rounded feathers just about everywhere and that is...
Thank you for that encouragement! I was so bummed because she is my first layer, then she got broody so quickly, and then I read that it could be MONTHS before she started again. I hope a week or two is more accurate. Oh, and I hope that the other three also start laying. Haha
HI there,
I was successful in breaking her of her broodiness. But it's been 7 days of no eggs. So, she laid for three weeks, went broody for three days (sitting on the nest day and night), and for one week has not been broody, eats, sleeps, drinks, etc., but NO eggs.
How long does this last?
Wow! Okay--I just didn't realize how young they could be. And such a bummer for me since her egg laying has stopped. I hope it starts up again soon. I have no fertile eggs since I have no rooster.
Can I x2 this?
My 25-week-old easter egger just started laying three weeks ago--about 6 little green eggs a week! Then about twelve days ago, she was going broody, sitting on the fake eggs (2) as I collected the real ones all day and all night. I kept picking her up and putting her in another...
Thanks for this Ol Grey Mare! I wasn't aware that they can start/stop laying when they first begin to lay. That seems to answer my problem with my girl who started laying three weeks ago and has now stopped for the last six days (she started going broody at 24 weeks, and I broke her of that)...
Yes. Your math is the same as mine. (Am I misunderstanding you?) I was saying that the coop is too small at 5x10x5 for forty birds. The run should be bigger too.
As far as why they've stopped laying, have they ALL stopped? Molting, diminishing daylight, stress from tight quarters all seem...
Hi acts4me,
Your dimensions are precisely what I thought, but thank you for clarifying.
My understanding is that each coop needs to have 4sq. feet of space per bird. If you have 40 birds inside the coop, that would mean the coop should be 10x16 to allow enough room for the birds to settle...
I'm so sorry about your loss. I was going to say that my 6-month old easter egger laid eggs for three weeks, then went broody, and now she's stopped laying for five whole days (she was laying six per week). I was surprised. So now, none of my girls are laying at all. Grrr.
This still seems small to me. I was under the impression that you need about 4sq. feet per bird in the coop. A 5x5x10 would allow for about 12-13 birds I think. Mine is 4x8x4 and I have four birds (they obviously have way more space than they "need" but I want them to be happy).
Unless someone...
Hi ChickenCanoe,
Thanks for the tips! I am sure they are her eggs as she is the only one laying (the others haven't started yet). I did have a couple fake porcelain eggs in there, which I have removed. I have no roosters, so they are not fertile. The funny bit? This is the bird that was...
Hi All,
My 24-week-old easter egger just started laying about 2-3 weeks ago. Well, four days ago I caught her in the nesting box over night. She continued this into the day time. I've moved her out myself a few times and she starts to eat and "play" with the others in the run, but the next...
