I am just checking to see if anyone else here has had this happen with their hens.
We have a sex link red hen who just started laying about 2 months ago. She has consistently laid about 1 egg a day now since then. The other night when we went to show them off to someone there were two eggs in...
I was SO afraid I was going to get boy votes:( We can't have roos here, he is the best little guy ever too, friendly, tame, and easy to catch - oh well
Is this really a she or is it as I suspect and a he? 2 months old and a mystery chick btw........

Thanks all!
Pat- the wire area is just wire right now, but once they are getting ready to lay I will actually add the boxes and put either shavings or cut grass in there. And yes, they will have a large fenced in area once they are a little older to free range in. It has fallen trees, bushes...
Good Evening All,
I have a split level coop; the top level has a"loft" that has wire flooring where the nest boxes are and the bottom level sits on the ground. The part that sits on the ground is what I want to ask you all about.... At the moment my chicks are one week old and I put them in the...
I guess we will have to wait and see! "Her" legs and feet seem no bigger than the others, but she is just a big chick. Hopefully she stays a she since we can't have roos, but if not... we'll rehome her to a good person and go visit!
Thanks again!
Thanks for the reply - I figured it might be genetics, but since I've never delt with male chicks I also wondered if the male of the species was larger at birth......
Hi All,
We got a batch of Amerucanas from McMurray last week and from day 1 we have had a chick that is HUGE in comparison to the others. We wanted only females and I know it's not perfect science but if she is substantially bigger than her sisters is she a she? Does size mean anything or will...
Thanks for the reply.. we only put them there for a bit of play time when my daughter is home from school so she can play while I clean teh brooder, but will try to see if putting something down first helps.
Hello all,
My one chick keeps picking at her calluses on the bottom of her feet - they don't look inflamed or anything but should I worry? She is only 1 week old and displays this behavior more when we let her out of the brooder to play on our tile floors.
Thanks,
Alexandra
mine looks like it has copper highlights on the end of her fluff - she ( I HOPE) is so pretty, but sh eis pretty dark, not as much light areas as yours - but maybe.....
I ordered my chicks from McMurray and got a free mystery chick - after looking at their website and pictures I THINK it is a partridge rock, what do YOU think?

Would LOVE to have eggs if I could be guaranteed only hens Not allowed to even have hens in my neighborhood - but I'm going to do it anyway.....
Thanks for the info on the jars....
Do I dare not buy the quart jar that comes as an add on to the feeder and waterer base from Jeffers?

Can I use any quart jar with this base...
You could split the difference by using a wire floor, and covering it with newspaper or cardboard while the chics are small. That way they get ventilation, and easy cleanup, without stepping on wire. Then when they're bigger you can skip the paper and let the poo drop through.
LOVE this idea!
I am getting some chicks in a few weeks and am trying to lay in supplies now. Do I REALLY need a chick waterer or can I use a regular waterer? If I need something smaller can I not use a weighted low plastic dish? I will only have 6 maybe 7 chicks after I give away the other 20 the next...
Thanks!
I was going to let my babies stay in a plastic tub inside until they got feathers, but after that I was going to toss them into the coop/hutch. Our weather is a constant balmy (70 in January at night and 95 during the hottest days in the summer), so I am not too worried about them...
