So I have about 11 assorted chickens over a year. Orphingtons, deleware, ee, American, austrolorps. They all lay pretty regularly. We also have 4 babies that are about 11 wks, maran and partridge penedesca. I have now for the first time ever collected 3 robin size eggs. Is it possible that...

    Rusty waterer

I have a gavilnised waterer for our chickens. Apparently you can't put apple cider vinegar in it or it will rust. Well I did not know that until after I did it! Now I can't get the rust off. Tried steel wool but it came right back. Any suggestions? Thanks

    Egg bound? Broody? Something else?

I have a hen who won't leave the nesting box. It has been about 4 or 5 days. I have checked her for an egg. I don't feel a bulge, I actually use Vaseline and checked internally, tried the warm water bath. When I make her come out she usually frantically eats and scratches the grass and lay...

Red tail has killed 2 of our girls in the past 2 weeks

I guess I was wondering more if the meat would be bad because the adrenalin was pumping so quickly rather than resting. I know she has only been gone for about an hour. When you say rest, do you mean while it is alive or do you mean to let the meat rest? I'm a little ignorant to this subject...

We lost our polish first who was a small chicken 2 weeks ago. Today we lost sammon favriole who is a pretty stocky girl. We have a secure pen but on such a gorgeous day they love to be out. We happened to be inside when the commotion happened. By the time we had gotten out there she was...

    Rescuing a plucked clean chicken

We are rescuing a chicken that is pretty naked. It was bullied by the other birds. My question is since it has no feathers, should I have a heat lamp at night for her? I am going to make her a jacket until she grows some feathers. I am conflicted about the heat lamp because I really didn't...

    Questions on free ranging

I'm new to chickens.. I free range my chickies only when I am home. I have 2 questions. Do I need to put them in there pen when they are calling for a storm? I always thought they would just go back on there own if they senced a storm, but they don't. Second question is as they get older will...

12 week old golden laced wyandotte... genders?

Thanks for everyone's responses. With bird 2 I was wondering if he was a cockerel with the feathers that appear to be saddle feathers and also the way he carries his tail. However I have also read in another posting that his lacing would be to perfect to be a male.. So I still don't really...
