I have a hanging 5 gal bucket with poultry nipples in the bottom and it works great, but the downside is that the birds jump up on the bar it hangs from, and poop on the bucket. I'd like to find a bigger container that I could put just outside the run, with a pipe into the run fitted with...
I think 10 or so is a good number for your setup. I built my coop for 8 (32 square feet inside and 96 SF outside) and have 5 in there and it's just right. They are happy and have no issues; I think if I tried putting 8 in there, it would be a little too tight. 10 hens will give you LOTS of...
Mine got bread, grapes and cottage cheese this morning, so I'm not sure how I'm going to out-do that. I think I'll hang up a whole cabbage for them to peck at, and maybe give them some hardboiled eggs and more grapes. They've already got a Flock Block and suet. Spoiled birds.
I agree with HogBack. I went to Oregon State University, and had other roommates in the ag program. $1000/month for a house in the country, split 4 or 5 ways, was as cheap or cheaper than staying in the dorms. Didn't have chickens, but I don't think it would have been to hard to find the...
We had a really cold snap in November and all of mine stopped laying completely. Now that it's not so cold (20's to 40's), I'm getting an egg or two per day from 5 hens. I wonder, being in Canada, if your temps and photoperiod have a stronger effect than here. I think if you put artificial...
three of my five ladies seem to be in a light moult - new feathers coming in, looking scraggly, and feathers everywhere. Just wondering how long it will be until they're back to their former plumed glory?
I don't have pics, but I found a round stained glass rooster decoration at a discount store (Marshall's) and hung that by the door to the run. I bought a horseshoe and spray painted it silver and hung it over the pop door. I'd like to get a painted sign made for the front of the coop, but I'm...

I'm up on the other side in Southwest, just outside city limits... The snow is definitely deflating a bit today. I'm glad I shoveled a path to the run today, takes a bit of elbow grease to get it done, but the run won't be too mucky once this all melts, either.
Next time we get a big...
Is there any way you can make a protected area for them? I am really glad that I went with a raised coop. Unless the snow is blowing around a lot, the area under the coop is dry; I'm thinking of putting plastic sheeting around the wire so snow can't blow in there. I hadn't anticipated so much...
My girls were also laying outside of the box. I ended up putting a bucket or something in the spot they wanted to lay, and left a few eggs in the nest at all times, and they eventually figured it out. You might also try putting a crate or something in the place they are laying, and once they...
Well, I went out and shoveled out the deep parts of snow, picked the girls up and put them in the run area under the coop. Of course they squawked like I was killing them, but then realized that they were hungry, and started eating and walking around looking for scratch. Silly birds.
My girls did not want to come out of the coop this morning. We had 6" this morning, and got 2-3" more during the day. I was a meanie and opened up the man doors on the coop since it was going to be in the upper 30's today and no wind - figured they may as well get lots of fresh air if they...
Oh, it's been down to 0 F a couple nights here already, which is colder than it usually gets all winter. I think we're in for a long cold one, but I ran an extension cord and put in a trough heater, so no ice busting for me - I don't think there would have been any liquid water anyway, just a...
Wow, thank you for sharing! I think that one leaves all the other beautiful coops I've seen here in the dust. That guy is seriously talented, and that coop is just beautiful. He said he spent 97 hours painting that mural, which really doesn't seem like that much time, considering how much...
I didn't feel like calling around, so I just ordered 50# through an Amazon.com vendor and it was like $48 with shipping. Local may have been a bit cheaper, but add in gas and my time and all, and that seemed like a good deal since it should last forever with my 5 hens.

Interesting, because I put some cooked turkey necks out with mine's treats today, and they didn't touch them. I thought they'd go crazy for the protein.
Yesterday they got warm scalloped potatoes and scrambled eggs. Today was the turkey necks, brussels sprouts trimmings and leftover...
I went for more of the red barn look with mine. I see it from the kitchen window, so I wanted something I'd enjoy looking at. I need to get some new pics since I've done more to finish it up this fall...
I saw this in my horse tack catalog, and plan to get one for my coop. I use a regular stall fork right now, but it only catches the big stuff.
