I also wouldn't buy from Chase hatchery again. Too much risk for my size flock. I did have my chicken necropsied and I do know what 3/4 hens died of. My pullets also came with coccidiosis and she had meat birds that are not sexed housed with sexed pullets which is how I ended up with a meat bird...
My final thought. I live in an agricultural area. I have connected wth many people that raise chickens "naturally" - your true backyard flock. And any of them would most likely sell me a chicken. Some would vaccinate probably. Some would brood them for me. But they would never EVER represent...
I certainly hope this is all true. Three birds lost with serious issues (like potential Marek's or Leukosis) is too much risk when you have a backyard flock of four. Not to mention sad. In all of the defensive statements. . . . an "II just didn't fully understand what I was doing" or an "I'm...
You still might lose your flock that is infected, but I gather if you get chicks/hens that aren't infected you are good to go. A much better prognosis than Mareks which is long lasting in your environment.
leukosis and I gather (I am not an expert) that if you have hens that have it, they will most likely die. It is only infections via mating and mother passing it to offspring via egg. I gather it is difficult in death of a chicken to tell the difference between Mereks and this but this is...
I have a friend who is a vet pathologist who is inclined to believe it is one of the other two viruses given my hens were all over the age of 18 weeks when they got sick and died. The symptoms are so similar. She still recommends vaccinated chicks, but feels like it has a strong possibility of...
Interestingly, I learned that the second most likely disease that it could have been (I didn't do DNA testing) is leukosis. Leukosis can pass from mother to baby via egg production (not to humans). They tend to die from this at ages older than 18 weeks. If you got your babies from a certified...
Suspected Mareks, although could be one of three viruses that causes tumors and displays similarly to Mareks. I have new chicks and all are vaccinated. I think I will just keep on with the flock I have. . . keep getting vaccinated chicks. =( Bummer.
It was a little harder. . . but easier that she died on her own. I took her in for a necropsy at the local Vet Pathology Lab. We've lost three under a year and I want to know what it could be.
Ha. Thanks! I wish I could bathe her tonight but I am guessing it will take a long time. Thanks for the vote of confidence. I soaked some of their feed today. I might ferment some. . . she seems to like that and it will get her extra water.
I'm going to try to bathe her this weekend. I'll do an epsom salt soak and try to get the manure off of her tail feathers. She has been sleeping in the nesting box (better balance I'm sure) and so the poop is getting kinda globby.
She is still fairly inactive, but is feistier every day that I am giving her the antibiotic and dewormer. She almost seems to have a limp. Time will tell I guess. She will eat oats like they are going out of style. LOL!
