    Bad Egg in Incubator

Amazingly, the smell really was gone within about 3hrs after I removed the bad egg and other infertiles and did the listerine mist. I was surprised, gotta say; it was a truly AWFUL smell, I really thought they were all rotten at first

    Bad Egg in Incubator

I really wasn’t expecting the little guys until sometime tomorrow, so now I’m madly setting up the brooder and too excited to sleep; I can’t stop watching and waiting for more to emerge!

    Bad Egg in Incubator

Thanks - I did much the same, but on a smaller scale and with a dilute listerine mix in a spray mister. I was worried it might have harmed the remaining eggs, which copped some of the mist - but must have been ok, cos I just got home from nightshift and.... its beginning! My first hatch of...

    Bad Egg in Incubator

It still smells pretty bad in there...... but I’m sure I’ve got the bad egg out.... I feel like I can’t take them all out and give the entire thing a good wash at this stage, without really upsetting the apple cart regarding consistent temp and humidity

    Bad Egg in Incubator

Hey all, quick question here - I’ve got a batch of home laid quail eggs in the incubator, but came home to a really funky smell coming from them. They’re due for lockdown tomorrow, so I just candled all of them and got rid of the ones that seem infertile, including one that I think was the...

    Sick Quail

    Sick Quail

OMG, I can’t believe you’ve got road trip quails.... that’s so funny. My quails get stressed even when I move their open ground coop once every 3 or 4months!

    Sick Quail

HA HA HAA, that’s hysterical! At least the apparent solution was the same for both potential problems! I read somewhere that quail walks backwards a lot when they’re constipated - lord knows whether it’s true, but maybe you can look out for it next time? I think making sure they get leafy...

    Sick Quail

I guess you might want check that she’s not egg bound? If she’s eating and drinking, but not moving much, I‘d guess she’s either egg bound or just old. That said, I don’t really know how to check if they’re egg bound.... I think you have to, ahem, get a good look where it counts?

    Sick Quail

How long have you had her? I guess there’s a chance she’s just considerably older then her friend and on a natural decline? They don’t have a very long natural lifespan.... do you see her drinking water?

    Sick Quail

    Sick Quail

I have found where I can source some oxytertracycline, but it specifically says "do not use in birds produced for eggs and/or meat". Half the reason we keep our quails is for their lovely eggs?

    Sick Quail

Oh no, I hadn't even thought of a necropsy! I'm kind of new at this - all I thought when I dispatched the poor girl was "thank god the garbage truck hasn't been to collect yet this morning". And now, it has - so her body is long gone. I just read that Newcastle hasn't existed here in...

    Sick Quail

Ok, I just got home from my nightshift and checked on her and she was a lot worse. I had to put her out of her suffering immediately. Her head was tilted back and she was waving it around spasmodically from side to side and falling around running in circles. WTF is this and should I do...

    Sick Quail

There was a rather large legless lizard that we found in our swimming pool that got thrown in for the quails about 3 days ago - they all descended on it like ravenous fiends though, and none of the others seem to have suffered for it? We thought it was a baby snake at first, it was so big! But...
