Mystery TSC chick. 6 weeks old. Breed?

Pretty sure it's a rooster because his comb is so huge, but I can't figure out what breed he is. He was a mystery chick, pulled from the straight run bin at TSC. I needed one more to get a round 6, and asked for the biggest chick in the tub. He's about 6 weeks old.

Make your own - No waste - 5 gallon (25# feed) bucket feeder for about $3

We've been using one of these buckets for about a year now. They work great! I prefer using pellet feed in mine, and the girls like it, too. :)

    Burning Bush leaves

We have a burning bush in our backyard and the hens leave it alone. I suppose it isn't terribly delicious, they mostly just sit under it to sleep in the shade. It is one of the few plants back there that they won't eat. Now if I can only convince my one pullet that coneflowers are not for...

Make your own - No waste - 5 gallon (25# feed) bucket feeder for about $3

Thank you so much for this thread, we just made one of these bucket feeders for our flock yesterday. We have a very determined food-flinger, so we had to modify the access hole to kick feed back down into the bucket. We had a funnel and thought, "Hey, this could be useful." It was almost small...

    Chicken growling at me

I know the sound! Sort of a loud, low, gravelly "buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuk". I don't believe it is an angry sound, my top three hens out of five all do it when they see me coming and boy do they come running for treats. Your girls probably are just begging for tasty things from you, and have you...

    The Sussex thread!

Hello, I just found this thread today. Everyone has such pretty birds! Here are mine, Riker and Moe. I don't know what my flock would be like without the Wonder Twins, they're a hoot!

Review by '' on item 'Sussex'

I have two of these pretty birds that I received from Cackle Hatchery this year. They aren't on top of the pecking order and they aren't last either which is surprising because I thought their speckles would make them more of a target for bullying but that doesn't seem to be the case. Riker...

Hens suddenly snubbing the nest boxes?

No, I think it's just the younger hen, getting in there and pulling out all the bedding to lay on the floor. But I'm pretty sure it isn't Goldie, the lead hen. She usually gets in there, gets her business done and leaves. She's a very practical RSL, but you might be on to something. She's a very...

Hens suddenly snubbing the nest boxes?

Yep, there's a golf ball in each nest. They have been there since our eldestt started laying.

Hens suddenly snubbing the nest boxes?

We have 5 hens, 2 of which are laying. Our lead hen has been laying reliably in the nest box all summer with no issues and the second girl just started laying within the last couple of weeks. The problem we're having is that with the change in weather, the girls have started kicking all the...

    A Pricey yet Perfect Coop

We used the Garden Coop plans, so the henhouse is about 3x6 and the run 9x6...ish. The ground is sloped and we made some small adjustments for materials, but that's the rough dimensions. The slope in the ground makes getting into the henhouse to clean a bit of a chore, which was something I...

    A Pricey yet Perfect Coop

If I could change things up (and if my husband would EVER allow it), I'd build the coop about four times the size it is now and the run eight times the size. Can never have too much space for happy birds! I think I'd prefer one I could walk into as well, just for the sake of easier cleaning and...

    Let's see your egg baskets!

Right now we are only getting one egg a day so it seems a little silly to have a whole basket for just one. Maybe when the rest of the flock starts donating for their upkeep, I'll invest in a spiffy collection basket. xD

    Rooster is such a gentleman

If only we could have roosters in the city... :( I'd love to have a gentle Roo to keep my girls company.

What do you wish you had known before you got your chickens

To echo a lot of people on here, I would have redesigned my coop to be more easily accessible. The henhouse floor is much too high off the ground to easily clean. I manage, but it could be better. I also would have made the whole thing bigger. Much bigger.

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

First egg ever! Laid yesterday by our Golden Comet, Goldie. I don't even know what size it was. Definitely little, but bigger than a bantam egg.

    Mumsy's Romantic Garden Advice

Thank you! I am really looking forward to the class, as much as the ones tied to my major and I am fanatic about those so it really says something. Classes start on Monday and I'm already knee-deep in the book. I know that display! The indoor section is great for ideas. My daughter really...

    Mumsy's Romantic Garden Advice

Ideas for dog kennel pen roof to keep rain out needed! Please!!

What about something like this? Elevate one side slightly with 2x6s so the rain drains off. An alternative would be the same, but with 4x4 posts instead of fixing the roof to the kennel itself.
