Sustainable meat chicken dual purpose choice

...genetic or just her previous injury acting up. If it wasn't for her leg concern I would hatch out chicks from her and try to get some nice meat Capons. You could do sex-link crosses of dual purpose breeds and get some hybrid vigor to boost your growth rate. Maybe a Black Orpington/Australorp...

    Hormonal caponizing?

Thank you for the detailed update! Even though it's not a happy outcome for most of the cockerels :( at least people can learn from this, rather than having to start from scratch figuring things out.

Anyone Ever Use Capons To Raise Chicks?

So processed most of my capons. Kept three, a Black Copper Maran, Sicilian Buttercup, and an Egyptian Fayoumi x Speckled Sussex. Hoping to use them as surrogates next summer. "Orville" Egyptian Fayoumi X Speckled Sussex Capon DOB 04/16/25 "Stefano" Sicilian Buttercup Capon DOB 04/12/25 The...

    Hormonal caponizing?

...this update but here goes… Since I had hatched 10 roosters out of 18 (bantam) eggs, I solicited the help of an exotic vet to try and castrate/caponize the males. In order to do a practice run, I provided 2 post mortem birds. During her first surgery, she realized that a post mortem is a...

    Capon slips

I only have pullets, but I was curious, and so I searched on < capon slip site:.edu > (using site:.edu cuts out a lot of anecdata.) I think your situation is so uncommon that there's just not a bunch of info out there, especially since the testicle was completely disconnected. Since that is so...

Breeding my own flock, sound advice appreciated

I'm sorry for the loss. Do you mind if I ask some pointed questions? I know it still might be a raw experience, but it might be one we can all learn from.

What gender is my Japanese bantam

...really ill for the first three weeks to him/her life and I somehow managed to pull him/her threw and now im wondering if this baby will be a capon or a poularde on my farm:) Ever since a week or two weeks old he/she has been crawling in my hands but when the chick was strong enough i put it...

    Introduction

...soon be invited to dinner. I plan to add Jersey Giants and Black Australorps as separate flocks. I have been quite pleased to see that the chickens fad has matured into something deeper and more permanent, I am interested in anything to do with caponizing; that is the purpose for the Giants.

Breeding my own flock, sound advice appreciated

So... my vet had finally received the smaller instruments and I went to her with my last remaining 3 bantam roosters to have them castrated/caponized. I returned with 2 - *sigh*. The understanding was that surgery would be aborted if massive bleeding would again happen - and it did. So one was...

Neutering male quail: a philosophical discussion

...recommend doing it without general anesthesia! Moral qualms aside, quail are so little and high strung and the procedure fairly invasive that most would likely die of stress. So yeah, totally niche market here, do you think I can start a line of capon companion quail, $100 a pop? Just kidding!

Breeding my own flock, sound advice appreciated

I can help with breeding for meat if you want? I don't caponize, but I know how to breed for a meaty bird(s).

Breeding my own flock, sound advice appreciated

...a year or so. But it didn't change his behavior much (that was the intent and wasn't able to keep him.). This time around I plan on doing more in the way of experiments to see if caponizong at later dates help with weight gain But I'm almost positive it will effect the tenderness of the meat.

    Chickens and ducks

Hi! It's nice you are exploring options and advocating for the males in the poultry industry! Unfortunately cost and labor usually take precedence on a commercial scale, but it would be nice if this wasn't always the case. Do they do this?! I've only heard of ducks getting things dirtier...

    Chickens and ducks

Welcome to BYC. The fundamental problem with caponizing or raising layer breed cockerels for meat is that they have a much lower feed to meat conversion and the end result table product is very small compared to the Frankenchicken Cornish crosses. Caponization would only add additional cost to...

    Chickens and ducks

Maybe I got the introduction and posting mixed up. I found the site while I actually searching for info about capons. A huge concern among vegan activists, is the indiscriminate killing of male chicks, in the egg industry. The reason is because egg layer breeds take longer to reach dispatch...

    Capons DO crow!

Technically they wouldn't be cut OFF, but OUT, as they are internal. Actually it could benefit by becoming quite the hen's rooster, aka capon(ladies man[if not fast]). As roosters can really tear a hen up when mating.

    Hen or Cockerel !

...is the term for a female before first hatchday. Similar to "heifer" vs "cow" in the cattlemen's business. ("Steer" is the cattle equivalent of "capon" in chickens: the guy got castrated). Chick is the term for "I haven't figured out what it is and the voice hasn't gone from peep to honk yet".

    Effects of late caponization?

I am coming across mixed info on the 'severity' of the crowing in late caponizations. If it doesn't reverse the behaviour, making it less frequent and less loud is still a benefit. The question (for me) is how much lesser in frequency - both time- and noise-wise - can be expected. I am fishing...
