    Logo and rebrand

My advice is to avoid cursive (or any super ornate lettering) as it can be difficult for some to read, and you want the name to be very clear and legible. I like the font in the first 2 iterations. :)

First time layer questions from a first time pullet mom

Definitely an individual personality/breed thing. Some are super vocal and others aren't. My Leghorn sounds like she's being murdered every morning (while she's frantically searching for a place to lay her egg that ISN'T a nesting box) and my bantam Ameraucana makes the weirdest noise I've ever...

    Lost chicken, happy ending!!

As I was reading your twisted tale, my heart was racing thinking about poor Alice wandering around, in the dark of night, nary a flockmate or simplest sense of direction to guide her - predators lurking around every sidewalk and watering tank. She must have felt shocked, bewildered, and...

    Coop size

Ah! Yes, I read it as 6 birds and 2 of them are cockerels. I agree, definitely no more in that particular coop (and definitely need to lose one of the boys regardless)! If they go down to 5 birds (4P, 1C), 17 sq.ft. isn't terrible. 3.4 sqft/bird is doable with covered run for inclimate weather...

    Coop size

They have 6 birds that are eight months old (4 pullets, 2 cockerels) - I think that's where the confusion is. Everyone is seeing the number 8 in the OP and thinking that's the # of birds, but they wrote the word "six" ("8-month-old")...

    Coop size

No more chickens in that coop (unfortunately)! As others have said, that lower roost is kinda useless - I would raise it to the same height as the other one and give the existing birds more room (especially since you have 2 cockerels).

Are fall chicks a bad idea in Zone 5?

I like her. She's where I got the idea to brood in a tent with my first batch (which was a really good experience), and where I got SUPER confused about lighting for fall chicks. In fact, my comment is posted on her website at the bottom of that article - it's a big, long question about her...

Are fall chicks a bad idea in Zone 5?

I would not worry about this (Did you see it on The Featherbrain website?). I had the same question when I got my September chicks and spent an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out the correct lighting, only to discover it really isn't an issue. By the time the days are getting long...

Are fall chicks a bad idea in Zone 5?

I say go for it! I'm in MI (so we probably have similar climates) and got my first chicks mid Sept. a few years ago (4 buff orps and 4 barred rocks). I had them inside for 5.5 weeks and did get lucky with an October warmup when I moved them to the coop (I also had a Sweeter Heater hanging above...

Coop under construction ~ Anything I should be thinking about?

...(attempting to make sure there's at least 4 sq ft./bird in the coop). In an 8x16, I probably wouldn't do more than 25 (even though you could *technically* put 32 birds in it with the 4 sq ft rule). For the nest boxes, the only advice I have is to make sure they are lower than the roosts. You...

    Chicks

Be careful using that method with any certainty. I kinda feel like if it was that easy to sex chicks, no one would get accidental roosters.... 😬 Very cute babies!

Anybody Else Use ChatGPT to Help Plan their Setup?

I wasn't referring to you specifically, just more of a general "fear" (and I'm using that term loosely) of AI in the zeitgeist of this particular time period ☺️. I am also in a research/evidence-based field, so I have confidence in my abilities to find and understand reliable sources, too, but...

Puffy Chest and Neck Tucked In, Pissed Off

Hmm. I would just keep an eye on behavior, poops, eating/drinking. If she continues to have this stance and isn't moving around much, not eating/drinking, or not very alert (or if others start looking like this), I might be more concerned. Did this just start today? Have you had these birds...

Puffy Chest and Neck Tucked In, Pissed Off

This looks like the stance of a chicken who doesn’t feel well. How old? How are her poops looking?
