10-12 day old buff Cochin with splinted foot

Not a bad idea. You might also look into giving it B2 (Rivoflavin), as feet curling is an indication of a deficiency that is easily corrected but that can lead to paralysis and wry neck if left alone. Adding powder to their water should do the trick too.

10-12 day old buff Cochin with splinted foot

Right you are. He was picking at the second splint last night, so I took it off (he fell asleep in my hands while I was working on unsticking it) and he's FINE. Winning!

10-12 day old buff Cochin with splinted foot

Thanks for the reply! I just put the splint on last night, not even 24 hours ago. He's doing fine with it on, so I'll leave it in place until Tuesday evening after work (which would be 3 days on) unless something changes between now and then.

    Another Pasty Butt post...

Update: we ran their behinds under warm tap water and tag-teamed the process: he washed them and I dried and snuggled them. Everyone is fine now, other than a case of wonky toe in my buff Cochin cockerel which seemed to start with runny poop getting stuck to the bottom of one toe and drying there.

10-12 day old buff Cochin with splinted foot

Hi all: My 10-12 day old buff Cochin has a wonky toe, so I splinted it with a masking tape booty last night. He's doing great with the splint, very active, and no one's pecking at it or him. How long do I keep him splinted? I had originally read 3ish days, but now im seeing suggestions that I...

Hurt toe on buff Cochin: should I do something?

I also re-instituted the Quik Chik (contains 500mg Rivoflavin per 4 oz of powder). I'd discontinued it due to the pasty butts, but fearing some kind of B-vitamin related paralysis and wanting to cover my bases, I'm back to adding a 1/4 tsp per quart of water.

Hurt toe on buff Cochin: should I do something?

So I've got 15 buff orp pullets and one Murray McMurray rando which appears to be a buff Cochin cockerel, all about 10-12 days old. My buff Cochin (aka Feather Feet) had some issues with pasty butt, as did 4 of my buff orp chicks. That's over, and I noticed today when I took then outside that...

    Another Pasty Butt post...

So, 5 of my 16 have pasty butts -- 4 Buff Orps and 1 buff cochin -- and I'm wondering just how clean I need to get their behinds. All 5 are not plugged -- that is, I can see their vent, it's pink, and they can still poop -- but they all have crusty poop stuck to their butts. I'm trying to...

Roosting wounded hen: what to do for tonight?

As a (late) follow up and thank you, this is Lake today. She recovered just fine. :-) I brought her inside in the morning and cleaned her feathers and her wounds, which were minimal. She's white underneath, which made the wounds look like a complete horror show. In reality, what was probably a...

Broody in winter? More likely sick?

About a week ago, one of my buff Orpingtons started hanging out in one of the nesting boxes. My fella and I thought she was broody (and maybe she is...) but we live in Western NY and the weather has been hovering around 0 since she's been in the nesting box all day and night. She makes a soft...

Roosting wounded hen: what to do for tonight?

Hi, all: I just went out to secure the coop for the night, and our 6-month old Lakenvelder had been attacked. She was roosting with the other hens when I found her, and there is blood on the shavings under her and on the rung of the roosting box below. She appears to have a wound to her...

    Sick chicken?

Hi, all: Let me preface my question by saying that it's been hot and humid (90s and a t-storm last night) for the past 3 days here in upstate NY and that my chicks have been free ranging for about two weeks. They're about 6 weeks old buff orpington hens. This afternoon my fella found one of...

    Pullet or cockerel? Breed? (Moustacchio)

Wow: after reading that Lakenvelder chicks have 3 dots on their heads, I think you're right!

Still thinking a Barred or Plymouth Rock for this chick?

Now that this chick has some more feathers, are people still thinking it's a Barred Rock or Plymouth Rock? Gender? "Ostrich Baby" (compared to my buff orps) is so sturdy, but its personality is so timid and shy. Ostrich Baby in profile Ostrich Baby's backside

    Pullet or cockerel? Breed? (Moustacchio)

This is one of the "free rare chicks" I got from Murray McMurray on May 19th. More so than my buff Orps, this one loves to roll around in the dust. Any guesses on breed or gender? a shot that shows the mustache on the beak..: now that the feathers are coming in, here's a more helpful wing...

Too soon to move to in-coop brooder?

I ended up turning on a heat light only about a foot from the ground last night instead of using the already-in-coop light (which will be perfect once they're a little bigger). This morning they were snuggled up, but not piled up and in their box, which acted like a draft guard. I decided to...

Too soon to move to in-coop brooder?

Moved everyone out to the coop today. They love it.

Too soon to move to in-coop brooder?

Thanks for the advice: that's a solid plan. The light is hung a good 5 ft off the ground, but I know chicks were in here last summer. Good news is the light works and after 5-10 minutes the space under the light is warmer than the rest of the coop. I'll keep the chicks inside another day, but...
