New plans for old stuff & a chicken tractor

I make chicken runs similar to a tractor only smaller, more like a tunnel. They are sectional and can be put together to make large runs. They have proven to be secure from mid-sized predators over the years and can be modified to keep out small predators. Each section weighs about 40 lbs. but...

Will this work as a chicken run

I would put a skirting attached to the outside of run using a 2"x4" mesh coming out at least a foot along the ground. If you weight the skirts down with pavers or rocks, you can make everything movable and still stop diggers for digging under. If your shade cloth is over 2"x4" wire I would see...

Should I test the coop/run with bait for fox?

What part of your system did the fox make its way through to get at your chickens? Give use some pictures of your situation. I would beef up your outside perimeter, both vertically and horizontal across the grown. Putting food out will work if have a camera to watch and you are willing to move...

    egg-eaters

Those three eggs he had in him would have probably lasted him for a week or more. Snakes do not eat everyday. Some only eat once a month. For the amount of rats and mice he would have eaten over his lifetime you could have easily support him with a few eggs.

    Fox Attack and Obituary

Valuable or not, purebred or not, losing a pet is hard. I think most chickens can be made to be tame if they are handled at a young age. When I was a kid and we had an unruly rooster, my grandmother would cage him at night and the next day everyone took turns carrying him around the yard. It...

    Raccoons Came Back

The raccoon that was there during the day is probably one of the young of the mother raccoon. No more mama to count on to show it the ropes. If you don't secure your coop better, this is going to be a repeating problem no matter how many of them you kill.

    hawks

Having chickens free ranging is a rewarding experience, but there is no way to free range and not have loses. Losing a chicken you raised is hard and even people with LGD have loses on free ranging chickens. Have you considered an alternative?

Fencing Ideas for Rocky, Uneven terrain

I use a portable system that will work on uneven ground if it's not too uneven. It's made out of 12 gauge fencing. Only a few materials besides the fencing are needed and a few tools are needed for cutting and bending. I make them units for use in my garden, sizing them as suits my needs. My...

    Raccoon 2 me 0

This is the dilemma of all chicken owner with a heart have. How do I have a predator proof system so I don't kill of the wild life in the name of owing chickens. If you have a weakness in the security of your chickens, it will probably be found even if you dispatch this current culprit. I always...

    So, so sad, horrible morning.

My folks always use to tell me that if the hardware cloth didn't rap around something then it should be battened down. They screwed thin wood strips all along any hardware cloth edge that was exposed.
