    BR Turkey Gender help

This fine boy/girl is my first bourbon red turkey and is now about 2 1/2 months old. Any thoughts about what T's gender might be? Extra bonus points if you can help me win my bet with the wife about it being a Tom.

Need a big mean rooster breed to fight ravens

I've got two suggestions. One is as others have said, a good dog seems to be the ultimate answer for almost any pest issue one has. As for the other, it's a dumb idea but thought I would throw it out there. If I understand chicken fighting practices, people will attach razor blades or the...

Not sure about all turkeys, but the one I've got (Bourbon red) refuses to stay down. Given half a chance the little guy would be sitting on my head.

    Criag's list and GreenFire farm

So, today I was looking on my local Criag's list and found the following post for Lavender Orpingtons: http://fayar.craigslist.org/grd/2364743870.html Three 4 month old Lavender Orpington's for $150.... This bothers me for two reasons: 1) First, the picture looks like it came from hinkjc...

HELP! Eggs pipping on the bottom! Incubator newbie!

If you were not ready for lockdown, you need to get the humidity up quick. As far as helping the chicks, you should give them time to see how far along they can get on their own (even with a pip, your still 12 - 24 hours from a hatched chick). The rule of thumb I've seem and experienced is...

    $$$$

Hmmm... I know I have read somewhere on the internet about heritage turkeys going to $7-$8 per lbs (butchered weight) during the holiday. Saying you have a 16lb bird, that would only be $112-$128 a bird. I had thought at the time that must be a hard sell being that store birds are around $1 a...

    ratio of toms to hens

In the chicken world, I believe the rooster\\hen mix is 1 roo to 10 hens, anything less than than results in rooster fights and worn out hens. While this a smaller ratio for turkeys, you should have a happier flock with one Tom and two(+) hens. As far a fertility, I would say you can trust...

    Few Homemade Incubator questions

I've played around a lot with the wafer and I've found it works best if it is on (or close) to the same level as the eggs. With a fan, the air should be about the same temp anywhere in the incubator. Another thing you might want to add is some heat syncs (bottles of water, blue ice, etc), they...

    Cannibalism

If they have any lacking anything in their diet (protein, calcium, etc) it can cause them to eat their eggs. Before you cull them, I would give them tons of oyster shells, greens, and the like.

    TSC bantam game,

It's my turn for the "Whose my mommy" TSC bantam breed game. I think I've got two nailed down, but any advice is welcome Starting from the left to right Chick #1: Black body, golden face, black beak. No clue Chick #2: Silver body - I'm thinking this is a silver sebright, who will hopefully...

    Electrolytes, it's what chickens crave...

Quote: Ya, Durvet's V&E is what I used... I did read the directions, but used my own "red neck" math to gauge how much I needed. <.< ya... fail. As of right now, I've only lost one more chick. Figure after a full week, I should know the extent of the damage. Only saving grace is my local...

    Electrolytes, it's what chickens crave...

So, needing some input on a possible Idiocracy move my part. I read that giving new born chicks a vitamin\\electrolyte mixture in their water would give them extra strength after shipping... so when I got my order of Corish X chicks, I mixed some in (unmeasured, just good size dash) into their...

    adding poults back with mom

Best way to get a hen to "adopt" incubated batch is to let her sit on a few eggs. Within 12 hours of her eggs hatching, (*night time being the best*) you can slip the incubated chicks in. Not 100% adoption rate, but let's say 90%?
