Quail coop (Updated with new cage pics!)

Quote: There is nothing wrong with a Coturnix framework. Unless you just can't live without bobwhites. If your goal is to raise bobwhites, mearns, East Zambadieasion Gutter Snipes, or what ever, then go for that.

    Hatching Quail Eggs Under Hens

Quote: nothing works better than a good ole broody hen Maybe for chickens, but if you are serious about raising game birds of any kind....You need yourself a bator.

    Kitty food...Really???

Quote: Ok. I'm not trying to start a food fight, but what do you folks use? I feed KTA GAME BIRD BREEDER for the adults and KTA QUAIL STARTER for the chicks. More power to you that feed purina but I like to spend my money on better things than a fancy bag. Never heard of them either. Maybe...

Manchurian Quail sure look a lot like golden coturnix

So many names, so few coturnix. There are at least 2 names for the various coturnix color mutations, then throw in the sizes, and who knows what is what. Buttons are even worse with the different names for the same colors.

OMG...I'm a quail killer! What am I doing wrong!

The single best investment anyone can make...if you are raising quail in the coturnix or bobwhite weight class is a game chick water base. Wicking water into the litter is another story. That story will end soon for me if I manage to complete my zero litter brooder model. Coturnix don't...

    Hatching Quail Eggs Under Hens

Just buy or build yourself an incubator. It will work out better in the end.

    Kitty food...Really???

Quote: CAT FOOD! WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU FEED A QUAIL? Gosh you bunch of silly quailbrains.. lol I feed IMW (inter-mountain west) gamebird starter mash. It's practicly powdered food and it's 28% with probiotic yeast in it. Uhm, it's only 2 miles from my house which is awesome but it is also $18...

    Dusting

Quote: It's about the action, not the medium. If they are dusting in litter that is good enough IMO. Mine are on wire so I have to give them something that will not build up on the wire. I use sand, others use a number of things, like pot ash, potting soil, etc. I use those plastic pans that...

Quote: I'll second that. Most likely bobs.

    Dusting

A sand/dirt/dust bath is the most exciting part of a coturnix quails life. If you forget about the "Mite" thing, because most people raise them to much higher standers and mites/sarcopties are not really an issue, but it is part of their ritual.

How to make them start laying?

Quote: This is a really bad idea... Not only will this NOT WORK, IT WILL BACKFIRE ON YOU. You CANNOT FORCE A GAMEBIRD INTO LAYING... Coturnix love perpetual sameness. Change anything at all and they will make you pay--- "change my pen? BAD KEEPER! NO EGG FOR YOU!" "change my food? BAD...

    Kitty food...Really???

I have to agree. Don't over pay Purina for their nasty over priced feed in a fancy bag. Just feed your corturnix left over spaghetti, white bread, and iceberg lettuce! As long as you feed them oyster shell, they will lay like mad!!! NOT!

    Incubation Detail for Courtnix Quail

Quote: Maybe in an incubator that operates outside the laws of physics and nature. Coturnix are pretty fast hatchers, but don't over cook your eggs to get a quick hatch. If you do everything right, then somewhere between 17 and 19 days you should get your bulk hatch.

    Color help for Coturnix please

Quote: You can determine sex of pharoah/wild with some accuracy at that age by looking at the speckle pattern on the chest. Speckles right across = hen Speckles absent in the middle, with russet shading = male. I'd be pretty confident that was a hen I think that was a typo on Friend2Fowl's...

    Color help for Coturnix please

Quote: It's not stupid asking, because there are often several different names for most if not all color mutations in coturnix. They can vary from country to country, and even between regions in the same country. The brown color is often called "wild" because it is believed to be the color of...

PIC of this morning's weird quail egg!

Quote: I bet I could beat it down with a hammer to get it to size.. Since you have chickens to eat the larger bits, I would suggest sifting it through a screen. Give the smaller bits/dust to your quail and the big stuff to your chickens. You may have to do some experimenting to figure out the...

PIC of this morning's weird quail egg!

Quote: Gamebird starter is a complete feed as a starter, but not as a layer. It doesn't have the extra calcium that the hens need to produce shells. They do make a gamebird layer, Purina does anyway. The downside to that is the protein is only 19%. Gamebird starter is great for the protein...

PIC of this morning's weird quail egg!

Quote: YES IT IS COMPLETE AND MORE THAN ADEQUATE. SOME COTURNIX DO THIS AS A FLUKE THING EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE AND IT JUST BE A FREAK STARTING TO LAY THING TOO.... IT WILL PASS. IF YOUR BORED YOU CAN SET IT ON THE COUNTERTOP AND WATCH IS SLOWLY SHRIVEL..... Not that I have to, but I agree...

    What kind of light

Ok, I know the CF type bulbs you are talking about. I'm replacing all mine in the house as needed. I just use the regular (cheap) ones in the house. They are worthless for quick light outside when it is cold because it takes them so long to warm up and cast decent light. I was talking about...
