The 2nd photo in the original post shows the white discharge from the vent. She was drinking a good bit today. I haven't caught her today to examine her again--the chicken tractor she lives in makes her hard to catch.
I've not noticed her eating, but when she was in the solo pen recuperating...
She is not wheezing any more! But she does seem puny.
1--she sits in the nest and does not lay, perhaps to avoid her 2 roommates?
2--she's thirsty
3--her back end leaks a whitish dribble. What is going on here?
The picture is showing her, on her back, with skin issues (red bump) and white business that seems very odd. Treated with soaking to clean and applying betadine.
I didn't investigate her poop--there are 3 girls in the pen. No worms were seen on her. Good ol' internet said maybe gapeworm--so I...
Today I found this hen wheezing on inhale and exhale and being pestered by her 2 roomies. I had sprayed her within the month with BluKote on her exposed belly skin, so she's still slightly purple. However, I have so many questions about what's happened to her.
She has white grossness and a pink...
One of my pullets was behaving weirdly the other day, shoulders all hunched, kinda squatted down in the grass, right after I let them all out to free-range. I watched her for a while, wondering what was going on. Then she squats lower and pops out this:
Has anyone ever seen anything like...
I read somewhere that goldfish will eat the mosquito larvae and help keep the water trough cleaner for my steers. I've had them a week, and the water is GREEN.
Do goldfish help or harm the water trough?
Would the steers prefer clear water to green water?
I rescued 2 5wk old chicks, and one died. Now I have one vigorous chick who peeps SO much of the day from being alone. In the afternoon, I let her free range with the flock (Rooster and 17 hens). Chick is super gutsy but they still peck her on the head when they feel like it.
She's made it 4...
I've not noticed any other health issues for these girls.
I put DE in their food 2x/year, and in their nest bedding as well, for deworming.
Too much protein is curious. I'll research this idea. Thanks.
One good rooster and 5 hens live in this pen. It's 12x12x12. I have 5 pens of chickens, so I haven' t spent much time noticing what this girl is doing.
I was incorrect in title of post: they're 2yo, not 5yo. They look old!
Here's a sideways photo. Molted last fall, late. But now they kinda look askew all the time.
For what it's worth, our well water is high mineral water.
Fascinating. The pen right next to the youngsters' pen has a good ol' rooster but I never thought he could've helped the situation. Still glad to be rid of the juvenile boys. Not needed.
I give them oyster shell free choice and Layena layer feed. They get to free range 5 hrs/day. Despite good feed, someone is laying soft shelled eggs...
Two of my cream leg bars are 2yo and their low bellies look distended with no feather coverage. Their combs are floppy over on one side. They look so disheveled. They're laying maybe once per week. What is this? Should I cull them or are they missing some nutrient?
I have 20 new chickens hatched 3/15/25, 3 males, 17 females. The roosters came of age and crowed a few weeks ago. However, the females in the same pen are not ready to be mounted. They're looking like adults but they're still pullets. Is this normal? I'm curious. The males were so aggressive...
I have 8-week-old chicks in their own 10x10 pen. I've started letting them free-range in the late afternoons, but their instinct to go back home to roost isn't working very well. They go in to another next-door 10x10 pen where the adults are all roosting, or they just wander around in the grass...
