Every time my son takes in the mower bag to share fresh clippings, it's total mayhem! Something about that big black bag. They get over it pretty quickly, however. They love fresh grass clippings!
So my wife and I left yesterday for training. We got our easter egger in mid-May and have been waiting for the day she laid her first egg. Wouldn't you know it would be today! Our 13-year old son emailed us this pic:
Woohoo!
Mine are day 26. We thought we heard cheeping on day 23 or 24, but... No movement or anything now. Time to get rid of them... Still digging the 5 that hatched! I can't believe how fast they grow! They will be one week tomorrow!
Well, we have given up on our last 2 eggs, but I can't complain about a 5 out of 7 hatch on shipped eggs! Thanks quailladyoffortmyers! The 5 chicks are growing quickly and are already getting their wing feathers!
So I tried to candle our two remaining egg since our excellent broody got up and left them for more than 2 minutes for the first time ever. I can see a shadow on one end of one of them. The other egg doesn't let any light pass at all. I put them under our other broody, but I don't have much...
LOL! That would be how it would work out! That's the funny thing, though. Now that the wait for them to hatch is over, the wait to see what they are has just begun!
I know we have at least a couple of FBCM and the others are types of Cuckoo Marans. I sent a message to the lady who sold them to me to see if she remembers...
So the hatch date isn't officially until tomorrow, but we heard peeping last night and had a pip. Here's what the kids and I woke up to today. I'm surprised they actually went to school!
Here's the Mama with one of her chicks:
Here's one of the chicks my daughter is holding and named...
Thanks you guys! It's so fun to know how everyone else who's getting chicks is feeling. I checked again and we still have 5 chicks and 2 eggs we're still waiting on. I figure we're ok still to wait since the hatch date isn't officially until tomorrow and the eggs came from different hens and...
So I FINALLY made it home and went out to find 3 chicks out and fluffed and another almost all the way out!!! Woohoo! And there is another one that has worked its way about half way out! 5 out of 7!! I am totally thrilled! Pics to follow!
