    HUGE crops on Cornish Cross

Both are normal with X's. They get so big, so fast that there just aren't enough features to cover it all and their crops are noticeably big from week 2 (or so) on. Although a picture would be good to be sure it's normal. They are typically larger than normal though. The bald bellies will always...

Why was my 4 month old Pullet Broiler Tough?

Right. Once I did them correctly the meat was identical. I just got a BUNCH more meat out of the X's and and spent less money on feed, since they grew so quickly. You're thinking of old hens. But even they are still edible. They are just tougher. Many people either use them in soup or cook them...

Why was my 4 month old Pullet Broiler Tough?

Sine I originally posted this thread, I actually did buy 15 broilers (cornish X) ... butchered them around the 9 week mark and didn't notice much of a difference in the quality of the meat. I've never heard that meat birds (Cornish X... Delaware etc.) have more tender meat. They just grow much...

Broiler Meat Birds: To Brood Or Not To Brood

CX's are not genetically modified. Plants are genetically modified, not animals, generally. The CX is a hybrid bird. No less natural than a boxer dog or RIR chicken. They are just VERY specifically bred to get really big, really fast. You can target ANY characteristic you want and it still be...

Cost of Fertile Eggs from Popular Hatchery SUPER high?

I understand that. I run a business myself. But prices aren't set just because that's what they want to charge. Prices are set by the market. I'm not seeing why they're so high, but obviously there is a reason. oh well, not a big deal. Just surprising.

Cornish Cross with TOE GROWING OUT OF HIS THIGH??

Yes, I do my own processing and I think I'm going to process this one and the remaining other two today. I may record this one though. If I do I'll post the youtube URL here.

Cost of Fertile Eggs from Popular Hatchery SUPER high?

I understand that, but why would you pay $4.50 for an egg? Why not just hatch the eggs your hens lay (assuming you also have a rooster)

Cost of Fertile Eggs from Popular Hatchery SUPER high?

Why on earth would anyone want to pay MORE for a fertile egg, than they would pay for a chick that has already hatched? http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/special_assorted_chicken_eggs.html I'm considering incubating and hatching my own eggs and will likely just use the fertile eggs from my hens...

Cornish Cross with TOE GROWING OUT OF HIS THIGH??

Yeah, weird! I didn't notice this when he was a chick... I just noticed it the other day and he's almost 10 weeks old now... ready for butcher, but I'm not sure I want to eat this one! Ever seen anything like this? I almost wonder if maybe there is another chicken that grew inside of him or...

My Cornish X's Have no Flavor

I've heard all of that, but these CX's have less flavor than commercial chicken. Same breed, mine were raised in better conditions, fed organic feed, ACV water, but have less taste. Doesn't make sense.

My Cornish X's Have no Flavor

Has anyone else experienced this? This has been my first time raising and processing meat birds. I raised 15 cornish X's and have butchered about 7 of them so far. They are big (5-6 lbs) the mean is tender and looks great. But they just have very little taste. Of course marinades and other...

    Jumbo Cornish X's Dying

Well, so far so good. Since I posted this I haven't lost anymore. Is that a normal cornish cross in your pic or a jumbo (or is there a difference?) I got mine from McMurrey.

Blue Spots on Cornish Cross Chick

My layers are RIR's and Light Brahmas. And then I have a few barred rocks and white leghorns that are in a run until they get a little more size on them to release them to the rest of the flock.

Blue Spots on Cornish Cross Chick

One of my cornish cross chick has a couple blue spots in his fur. It almost looks like a few drops of die dripped on him. I remember seeing the same thing on these cornish cross chicks at tractor supply, although I bought mine from McMurray. Is it die? Possibly from the hatchery... something to...

    Jumbo Cornish X's Dying

I ordered 15 jumbo cornish X's for the first time. I know they're prone to health issues, but wasn't expecting it so early. In the first week I've already lost two. They seemed perfectly fine, then I check on them a few days ago and one is laying there with his neck back and spine curved back...

    INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I'm just outside of New Pal, near the Links golf coarse. I have quite a few birds... barred rocks, RIR's, Light Brahma's and about to get a fresh batch of Cornish X's for meat. Also about to start raising a few hogs.

No Rigor Mortis after Butcher? (no stiffness at all)

Correct. It generally sets in immediately after butcher and goes away after three or four days of "rest." In this case though, it didn't seem to set in at all, but I'm not sure if that's even possible.

No Rigor Mortis after Butcher? (no stiffness at all)

Is it possible for a roo to NOT go into rigor mortis after butcher? I butchered one yesterday evening and when we put it into the fridge the legs bent completely (others I've butchered were stiff before resting) and the meat in general felt very tender. I'm wondering if I may be ok to go...

    Resting after Butcher (How?)

Thanks everyone. I plucked, gutted, cleaned, marinated and stuck him in the fridge. :) We'll see what he tastes like in a few days. @ Chickenskin - I've already butchered a few and I think I have that process down. Pretty easy after the second one. I also have Joel's "Folks this ain't normal"...
