...oh, and those hackles will be shiny. Undeniably shiny. My hens have really pointy hackle feathers, but theirs are dull. The boys are super shiny. You won't mistake the saddles, though. I've seen the guys often have patchy red on their shoulders, but you can tell NOTHING from color. I have had...
Hackles will usually come in before saddles, and unfortunately each bird is different. Especially with this breed. From my experience, however, 16-18 weeks you will see the start, and know for sure by 20-22. With variance on either side of those numbers. Best of luck!!! He's soooo blue!!! <3
Just my opinion, but considering comb/wattles, I say boy. Feathering is no real help in this breed until later. Legs are a bit petite, but head shape and glowing red comb tells me boy. Even in the blurry pic, you can see how developed his wattles are. Fingers crossed for you, my gut says boy.
I know!! I'm glad she's a hen, too. Although I wasn't getting rid of her if she was a roo because her personality is so agreeable. lol She was so blue at the start, with a red head and stripe, very blue in the legs and throughout the back. It surprised me she turned so white! Anxious to see what...
Here is an updated shot of Beatrice, formerly known as Bucky. lol. I was so sure she was a cockerel. No tail until late, very slow feather development, comb was pink from the get go as were the wattles. She was a few weeks when they grew and reddened to the size they are now, but they stopped...

Wow!!! I wouldn't want to have to make that choice! IMO, they are all so beautiful and all for different reasons. AND I don't even know their personalities, I'm just going by pictures!! Thank you for this thread, I have learned (reconfirmed) so much just experiencing this with you. Like when...
What color is her butt fluff? Not always, but that is usually a good indicator. If it is blue, I would say she will be a dark blue. (Dark blues are my fav. That's why I watch for the clues!! :) )
I definitely agree with you. The bottom two are likely pullets, but don't rule out the top one yet. I have a pullet that had the same wattle/comb growth and they were even quite pink, but that was all they grew and haven't grown a lick since! (But I'm with you, I would still suspect a roo...)
That is a serious comb coming up, which would make me say cockerel. However, the feathers and stance just look so hen to me. Wow, that's a tough one!! Pretty enough in my opinion to wait on the egg before re-homing. Such a pretty blue!
I think chick 3 is going to be dark blue. I think it will look back until it's true adult colors come in (they change so many times!), but ultimately will be a dark blue. Just my opinion...
Ah!!! Sorry I misunderstood what you were looking for! I just assumed sex because that's been a hot topic in the forums lately!! LOL!! Did you see the pic posted of the three chicks? Pretty accurate, in my opinion...
In my experience, there is zero way to tell the difference between the male and female BLRW chicks (except vent sexing). Every time I think I land on a difference, I find out otherwise. What definitely does not work is feather sexing, the no tail=roo thing, early feathering, lighter blue on...
I say chick one is a roo, two a pullet, three a roo, four a pullet. Really it is too early to tell, but going by combs and wattles alone, that's what I think. lol
I was only thinking he was a boy because even though the hackle feathers are trimmed with blue making them look pointy but they are actually rounded, (they are the same shape as my EE hen), and those curved feathers at the tail DO look saddle-y, except not really narrow or shiny. I've seen hens...

I've maintained the thought he's a cockerel from day 2. Slow comb and wattle growth has had me second guessing lately. That and even patterned, rounded feathers.
