Instead of burying hc as a floor under your run, you can extend the walls into the ground about 6” which can keep your birds from digging out. But really thats overkill too. Just use the apron And you’ll be fine. prevent 2-3” gaps around your doors And at corners. Coons and possums can...
It depends what folks would be interested in. Letter writing, posting on threads here, calling neighbors, all with the goal of getting your own rep to commit to voting for it. Once it’s through the Tx House, wed move to the Texas Senate. If people were really gung ho, we could talk to Rep...
Hey folks, a few things have crossed my desk lately about State Rep. James White‘s plans to Reintroduce a backyard chicken bill in the legislature this spring. The bill would prohibit a municipality from restricting people from having backyard chickens and would enable everybody to have up to...
no Need to start a daily egg check for another 5 weeks. Maybe even 9 Weeks . My rule of thumb: wait until you are sure that you have lemons. Then check every day and stress that they will NEVER lay an egg. Then give up and resign the fact that you did get lemons. Then stop Checking and find...
@Sapphire Sebright is right. The heat could cause it. if they’re broody, they’ll stay on a “nest” all day and all night. If they are loitering on a nest for several hours during they day, they might be on their way to being broody, but aren’t truly broody until they hunker for 2-3 nights on...
If that’s all the chickens you have, I recommend switching to non medicated chick starter or starter/grower as soon as your current bag of feed runs out. If you can find starter pellets rather than crumbles then do it( I never can). Then plan to switch to layer pellets (not crumbles) at the...
everything I’ve read says that Cornish x’s won’t live much past 6 months, and after 7-9 weeks food conversion rate plummets. i just processed mine at 8 weeks because they couldn’t get away from the others and were getting mercilessly picked on/pecked.
I’ve experienced similar quiet on and around processing day. I’d always mused to myself that they were afraid they’d be next (ha!) but I’m sure it’s a pecking order thing. Also-never noticed a calm before the storm situation.
They’ve been integrated basically the entire time but now her motherly instincts are finished and she’s rejoining the flock as an adult rather than protecting the chicks. Just curious if she’ll have to re-earn her place at the top or if the order is preserved.
About 8 weeks ago, we had a broody hen adopt a bunch of littles. She was at the top of the pecking order and my buff Orpington was at the bottom. I’ve noticed that for the past few weeks, she’s given them less and less attention, which according to everything I’ve read, is normal. Today I...
I’m in a similar boat, living in an HOA and suburban neighborhood. my recommended breeds are below but 7 hens seems like a lot for a typical neighborhood lot. Make sure you have the space for them or that you don’t care about your grass. You’ll lose it.
my criteria have always been quiet...
I don’t think you’re dealing with skunks or coyotes. It sounds and looks more like raccoons/weasels/foxes. I agree with others that chicken wire does nothing to deter predators. Put up hardware cloth or welded wire at least in the bottom 4 ft
Nice! Looks like you’ve already done it! Where you write sliding door, If you don’t need another door it could be a sliding ventilation window Can’t wait to see the end result.
Hard to tell how securely built this thing is, but if it is currently decent, you Could enlarge it within The existing structure so that the inside coop Fills under the metal roof. I would keep that space underneath-no need for the coop to go to the ground. The goal is 15-20 sq ft of coop...
At this age, they’ll probably be just fine because there’s not a huge Size difference. Put them together and watch them for awhile. They should be fine because they’re not old enough to be territorial or to have established a pecking order yet. But do it ASAP to avoid such problems later...
I’ve made The feed switch before the first egg was laid when I was finished with a bag of starter/grower and we were at 22-23 weeks. All the signs were that laying was about to start And I didn’t want to have 50 lbs of feed I couldn’t use. If I recall correctly, everything went fine and they...
This. If they will stay inside this structure all day and all year, you’ll need a bigger coop for anything more than 4 birds (assuming your measurements are inches)
Is water getting in to the feed somehow? Maybe it’s traveling down whatever is being used to hang it (chain, wire, rope). That water will cause it to harden. Depending on the design of your feeder, you might be able to put a baffle on the chain, or silicon caulk where the water trickles in.
A few possibilities come to mind. 1)different food 2) install a bottom on the coop 3)install an apron 12-18” wide around the outside edge. Option 1 has a low probability of success honestly. Harassment and trapping probably won’t do you much good because squirrels are persistent and there...
