Hello folks.
I am looking for Coronation Colombian
Sussex Chickens. If anyone knows a good breeder in South Africa, please provide me with his/her details.
Hello
Yes this is a good way to tip your toes into the business. If this is a egg-lying F1 hybrid you should get good results. Do your research on the breed. Remember it's winter now so production without lighting will be terrible. Good lighting within the nesting area is needed and since its...

The numbers. Overall Mortality was 35% and now is at 20%. That is for chicks hatched from day one two six weeks.

So just a personal note on this thread.
I have now been using fermented feed for about 6months. The biggest change is the mortality rate among the little chicks. I would advise fermented feed for anyone keeping chicks 6 weeks old and younger, especially for the ornamental more fragile breeds...

The back half of this chicken is self-blue or lavender as it is called. The front half is white,
Most Roosters have two types of feathers that you can see. The top coat that is glossy, shiny long thin feathers that start at the head drapes around the neck and ends just before the tail...

The use of a little vinegar in the drinking water really works. However fermenting the food does have it's advantage. I was a sceptic at first, but the feed bill doesn't lie. Feed cost for my hatchery is down by 35% with a slightly lower mortality rate( about 3%) and the exact same...

The trick is to "dry" hatch. There is an article on dry hatching on the forum.
In short you don't add water to the machine during brooding -- only add water when you stop turning the eggs in preparation for hatch, that's day 19.
We have a lot of natural minerals I our water here and...
I have 8 phoenix chicks, 5 lav pekin chicks lot of black pekin chicks, 40 potch koekoek chicks, 3 blue Orpington chicks and about 40 mix breed layer chicks.... Lots and lots of chickens.

The sweat drops is a sure sign of too high humidity. Humidity is all about exposed surface area of the water and air flow. I would suggest you use something half the size for water.

As far as I know most Silkies are bantams, so too large eggs should not be a problem, but...

That actually sounds good. I have several polystyrene incubators that is very much the same design.
I use plastic egg shelves that can hold 30 eggs, like a egg tray at the supermarket just plastic, then I only turn the whole tray with all the eggs in it twice a day.

Why are they dying in the machine ?
Is the temp at 37 degrees Celsius?
Is the humidity no higher than 50%
Are you turning by hand ? Twice a day at the same time?
You're making sure the incubator does not experience any vibrations, this can kill eggs.
The most...
